Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?

Hey, that can be a big deal if your bed is against the wall.

I will have to agree with your correction. Fires are hotter nowadays because we have actively done our best to stop the natural fires that spring up year round. When we do not allow the many small fires to do their job, yes it their job to clear the forest floor and return the nutrients in the build up of natural mulch to the soil, allowing new growth to emerge. This natural mulch covering the forest floor has built up much higher than normal and does burn hotter and longer. Did you ever wonder why there are large groves of nothing but tall trees like the Sequoia and the Redwoods? It is because these trees have a very thick fire retardant bark that has allowed them to survive the fires for thousands of years just as the General Sherman in the Sequoia NP has for over 2200 years.
Cheers.

Letting fires go seems risky to me. Controlled burns make more sense, at least to me.

You are so right Thom. Idaho thought I meant that we should just let homes burn, of course not. This is a big problem down South here because we basically have no wet season to speak of and everything in the hills is tinder waiting for a spark, making controlled burns difficult. I do not remember the last time we had a fire in the Lake Tahoe area, I suppose that is why it is so intense.

I agree that over the last 150 years or so, we have had a profound misunderstanding orf forest management and are paying a terrible price for this now. And, of course, the West becoming increasingly arid only adds to the catastrophe.

But none of this should be partisan. It is a crisis for all of us (including those who do not livein the West) and bickering over who is at fault does not advance a solution.

BTW, we had a real soaker overnight here in Lisbon. I just went outside and stood in the rain for a while. Felt pretty good.

I understand that are they not only rationing care, but looking for hospital beds in other states.

But if the antivaxxers there had any moral integrity, they would refuse medical care when they get sick. Then there would be plenty oof ICU space in Idaho.

Thanks, we are. Leaving the country of your birth and where you have spent your entire life is not easy nor for the feint of heart.

We face the same challenges that all immigrants face. But it is quite easy to remember why we came (and its not just the fires and drought).

When we tarted planning this move a year and a half ago, my wife said to me "Let's have a more interesting retirement."

Mission accomplished.

Turning your back on your country after helping Beijing Joe Biden get in and proceed to destroy it is pretty CS. I suppose you will continue to vote absentee to allow it to continue.
