We are doing the Budapest to Amsterdam cruise in April 2022. I plan on taking my Nikon d7200 with the 18-300 zoom which will live on the camera. I will take my 18-140 as a backup lens. Also will take my Nikon bridge camera as a backup.

A flash will be in my bag along with extra batteries, memory cards, as well as other odds and ends.

I also have a third party gps that attaches to the camera and marks the location of each shot in the exit data.

We added three days on the front of the trip to visit Prague and let our body’s adjust to the time zone and three days to the back end for Amsterdam and area. We especially want to see the house that housed Ann Frank and her family

Now we are just hoping that the trip is not cancelled again due to COVID.

Have a great trip

Chuck

I have an 18-400 that lives on my camera. Great flexibility while traveling. It’s still better than carrying two lens. Good luck, I was going on a similar cruise that was canceled due to Covid.

Another question to get an answer to is how much weight is allowed in carry on. Some European airlines cane be real sticklers on this point. Don't have your lenses so obviously don't know the weights, personally I don't put such things in non-carry on, but if I ever take a telescope below equator I will have to and be sure it is covered by insurance.

Another problem can be within country/Europe flights if any. Often possible to get more from US to say Europe, but then different rules for points within. Had this problem going to Faroe Islands from Iceland for an Eclipse, could not pay for higher weight, another bag, etc. period.

Just some thoughts;

If you are going to take your DSLR I would advise the super zoom, but also get the 10-18mm wide angle. It is lightweight but a very high-quality lens for the price. It will be really useful in cathedrals, museums, vineyards, for getting landscape shots, etc.

I agree with the thought about leaving your DSLR at home and taking a smaller pocket camera or a newer iPhone unless this trip is a photography trip and all involved will be shooting.

I did that cruise a few years ago and was very happy with my 24-120 f4 on a D750. I brought the 50mm f1.8 for night and indoor dinners. Didn’t use it much.

I was on a river cruise, Heartland of Normandy and Paris a few years back. I also have the 80D with the vertical grip. Took 2 lenses with me. 10-20 wide angle and the 18-400 which is my walk around lens. You'll most likely be shooting a lot of landscape and even street scenes. The 18-400 gives you numerous focal lengths and lets you get in tight to shoot details. The 10-22 is great for shooting wide landscape scenes and even in small areas. BTY. if you think that 18-400 makes your camera heavy, I'm 87 years old and the 80D w/vertical grip and 18-400 weights just under 5 lbs.

I am also going on a river cruise in April (Amsterdam - Basel{Viking}). I plan on taking my first steps into the mirrorless world with the Nikon Z50 and it's two kit lenses (16-50 & 55-250mm). I decided to leave my hefty DSLR gear home and spend more time with my companion and enjoy the views a little more.

Make sure you have good rain gear and a warm sweater. The weather in the Netherlands can be quite chilly and damp. The cold can go right through you. As you head south it will improve.

Nice - good decision re lenses (24-375 FF equiv FOV).

My wife just returned from a Viking tour from Budapest to Passau. She has a wonderful time, nbut the pandemic really took it’s toll on the tour. The longship had a capacity of 190 guests and requires a crew of 45 to operate. The number of guests onboard was 38. Needless to say, she and her companions got first class service.
She only had an IPhone 11, I think, and it did a very good job. Here are a couple of her shots.

Outstanding compositions❤️💎💎❤️

We did a Viking cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest in 2017. I took the vast majority of my images with the 24-105L, (my main walkaround lens) or the 70-300L. I spent a lot of time on the top deck taking pictures of the various castles, vineyards, villages, etc. and used the 70-300 most of the time. I did take my Sigma 150-600 with me but I don't think I ever used it and would definitely not take it again.

Exceptional compositions ☀️☀️🎖️☀️☀️

We made that trip in 2018, it was just wonderful! I hope you can spend a couple of extra days in Amsterdam before the cruise. A big lens left on board would allow you to capture distant views along the way since so much shooting will take place while on the canals and river. Here is one taken while on the Utrecht Canal.

Beautifully scenic ⭐⭐⭐⭐

If all pans out we are planning to go on a River cruise in April from Amsterdam to Basel. I have a Canon 80D with 2 kit lenses. 18-55 and 55-250. I also have a 50 mm a 10-22 and big 18-400. Don’t want to take the 400, too heavy. If you were to take one or two of the lenses above which would it be? 2nd question. If none of the above are decent, What would you buy if you had to take just one travel lens

We are too but what are the odds that travel restrictions will be lifted fully by then? I don't want to go if I have to wear a face diaper the whole time.

We did that exact trip two years ago and I used my 24-120 lens constantly. I brought two cameras and had my 18-200 on the crop sensor body. Only used the two cameras together one day on an extended cruise past dozens of castles. Glad I had them both. I know it’s heavy, but I’d think hard about the 18-400. There were moments when the 400 would have been ideal. The range of photo ops argue for the flexibility of the 18-400, IMO.

Two is fabulous 🌀💞🎖️💞🌀

I don't have a Canon, but the 80D seems to be a great camera. For travelling light I think I would buy a used Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, (about GB£150). That gives you an FF equivalent FOV of 27-200 in one lens. Reviews are good.
If you are happy to take two lenses - stick with your 18-55 and 55-250.

We did the Holland canal trip some years ago. I have the 80D and my walking around lens is the 18-135 which covers about 99.9% of what you need. We did Ireland with the rig a few years ago and it worked fine from dark cathedrals to broad land scape to distant sites.
