ok, i hope i can write this write for everyone to understand what i am asking. i finally received my new nikon d7000 and am totally new to this so please forgive me but...
the camera has 2 memory card slots . i programed the camera so one card holds RAW and one card holds jpeg to start out with. my problem is when i download them to the computer how do i know which is which? it only shows one picture of each. for that matter how do i download from only one card and not the other? or how do i know which card it is downloading from?
Assuming you are using a PC...with some flavor of Windows.
Use windows Explorer (My Computer) to list your files.
Right click on one and click <properties>. You will see the type of file.
Hope that helps :-D
Word of advice...go to your local library and take a beginning computer course or check out one of those simplified books on using a computer.
thanks for the advice but was wondering how to know which memory card i am downloading from since there is 2 in this camera. Should i just take one out while i download and then switch them? they can also be used for overflow so they will have different pics on them.

RTFM. Should answer this question. Also, RAW files will have a .cr? extension, and JPEG's will have a .jpg extension. RAW files will be large, while jpeg files will be 3-5mb in size (approx).
I know when it is already downloaded how to find out what it is. my question is can i just download one card at a time and how do i know which card i am downloading?

Again: RTFM. This is great problem solver.

When you programmed the camera to save to different cards, you told it which card to save RAW, and which one to save JPG. You may need to review those settings.
How are you downloading to the computer? If you pull each card from the camera and use a card reader, you'll know which card you're downloading from.
I can't think of a good reason why you would want to download from one card only, and leave the images on the other. If you're using a USB cable to download from the camera, you should get all pics from both cards.

The information from Carioca is dead on. Follow his suggestions, and your problem will be solved.
Why don't you take the card out of the camera and put it directly into the computer to downlaod? That way you would know which one it is.....

I have a D7000 with the same menu. You take one card out at a time, put it in a card reader and load those into the computer, then do the same with the other card.
Since the RAW files (NEF in Nikon) are much larger than the JPEG files. you will fill the RAW card fills up quicker (assuming they are the same size).
You may also set your camera so that card 2 is the overflow, after card 1 is filled.
You can also shot exclusively in NEF (RAW), load those onto your computer, and convert them to JPEG, if you have a program to do that (I use Nikon Capture NX2 to convert).
I recommend always shooting in RAW and saving them as negatives, and adjusting from JPEGs.
Have fun. The D7000 is a wonderful camera.
I almost never download from the camera. You can always put the memory card into a slot on your computer or a card reader.
thank you dron, that sounds good. i have just always downloaded thru the camera. i can change them in lightroom 3 but will look into nikon capture nx2. it might be faster. so i guess you would keep one folder jpeg and one folder RAw to make it easier. i would like both for when i upload to facebook or send as an e mail but want raw to work with and print out.
If you have Lightroom 3, it is very easy to convert to JPG and upload to Facebook or to email. There are some built-in helpers in menu File|Export... or File|Export with Preset. On the File|Export... dialog there is a button for Plug-In Manager that will give you acces to lots of third party export helpers. There are several by Jeffrey Friedl that are outstanding, and can do Flickr, Facebook, SmugMug, etc. Lightroom takes care of all the conversion from RAW (or any format) to JPG.
