Probably because the whole "intent" of the football game is very different from the rugby game. The football game is played in a series of "stop & go" plays. A rugby match is one of constant motion (similar to a soccer match). And, there are few "stoppages" in the action. . .And, the rules (of rugby) reflect that constant action. And, "tackling" is very different in rugby; and, also reflects the constant action. Hence, the "bone-crunching" tackle and "take down" of American football CAUSES more injuries because of the NEED to stop a runner in his tracks! Weighing only 175 lbs, I was often able to "slow down" a much larger player who was trying to "elude" me rather than run over me because if I stopped him, I would have help from other players AND "force him to release the ball" because of HIS need to remain in motion. Holding onto the ball without releasing it causes the referee to whistle him for a "penalty."

Whereas the American football player can run into opposing players; and, run over (or, INTO) them; and, stoppages of action are allowed. . .So, are injuries more a part of the game because of the "smash-mouth" tactics which are a part of the "mentality" of the game. And, if you have ever played even a few minutes of American "Tackle" football, you immediately understand the need for "body armor." (American Flag football which does NOT allow full-body contact; also does not require full body armor!)

Lots of good mid-section tackles.

My daughter and her friends play rugby and one of the girls is now on the National team. I have seen a lot of tremendous hits/tackles. In this video you see a couple of real serious hits but for the most part you mainly see regular tackles. Doesn't do justice to those girls that really nail the runner in rugby games. They are pretty darn tough when they play. Awesome.

Looks like there were plenty of hits that could cause injury in these matches.
