Ken Rockwell is acoarst far from perfect, but he’s waaaaaaaay more useful than all that pretentiousness and geeky lab tests.

I think you should get the very sharp, very very sharp, Nikon 105 D. You will also be happier after your purchase.

I agree with you. I had a 105d and thought I would upgrade to the new 105 micro vr. Not any sharper than my d. I sold it 2 fast. Should have kept the d and sold the new one. Lol

Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro is superb. I still regret selling my like new copy to buy the inferior AFS micro Nikkor 105mm f2.8 VR, whose images were definitely softer. When I looked at the super sharp tiny barbs and hairs on the insect macros shot with the Tokina vs the hazier hairs on all the images out of my AFS Nikkor, I decided to get rid of the overpriced latter because I can't stand less than outstanding sharpness right out of camera. The Tokina is very well priced also and is well built.

No experience with the Tokina. I have a Tamron 90 mm macro that is excellent. There are several from Japan for $149 +. Free shipping. Rated near mint. I’ve bought several lenses from Japanand been very pleased. Seller rated 100%. These Tamrons are on eBay. I don’t think you will be disappointed. Make sure you get one with the correct Nikonmount.

Hi Royce,
I have the Tokina 100 micro and love it. Reviews on it are fantastic. Be aware, though, that there are two models, the ATX Pro and the newer ATXi. You can get a new ATX-i right now from Adorama or B&H for $429.

So, $399 for a used, maybe older model vs. $429 for a new one with warranty is the way I would go.

Happy shooting!
Hi Royce, br I have the Tokina 100 micro and love ... (show quote)

The only difference I can find with the new model is the appearance. All specs are the same. But I do agree that $30.00 is not much savings (to give up the warranty that comes with a new one)

I have a Tamron 90 mmmacro. Excellent macro lens. On eBay right now, there are at least 3 available for Nikon in the $150 range from Japan, rated excellent, or near mint. Free shipping. I have bought several lens from Japan and was very pleased with the seller, received product promptly. Always as represented. Buy from a source with100% rating.

Hey Hoggers still looking at macros and ran across a side to side comparison of the Nikon 105 and Tamron 90 by The True Toad. Anyone know who he is? Is he creditable? He pretty much raves about the Tamron over the Nikon. I want the option of Vr on or off so the Tokina is out. So guess I better take a hard look at the Tamron??

I a Tamron 90. Great macro lens. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one of those from Japan for $150 or so. The one on eBay for $151.99 sounds great . Free shipping. 100% buyer rating. Also one on west coast for $169.

If you will be using the lens mainly for macro, keep in mind that most good macro is done by focusing manually, not via AF or VR. But if you will be needing the lens for other types of hand-held photography where the VR may be useful, then by all means get a lens with image stabilization. I have no experience with the Tamron, but I had lots of experience with the AFS micro Nikkor 105 and was very disappointed in its performance either manually focused or with AF after I had carefully calibrated it for my usual working distance. When I compared the images at higher magnification, the tiny details in its macro photos were always softer than those out of the Tokina. I suspect the high number of lens elements within the AFS Nikkor had something to do with giving softer output. Like I said, I was disappointed enough to happily get rid of it. Now, that's my own personal take on the crummy Nikkor, because I happen to be a real stickler about image IQ, and I don't care for any softness, unless I deliberately employ it artistically.

I didn't find not having VR a deal breaker. When using it as a macro I manually focus and use a tripod where VR is not used. When using it for normal shooting it is a fast lens and make sure I hold it steady and/or brace myself - which I should always do anyway so it hasn't been an issue. Bottom line - great lens at a great price.

Don't be so quick to rule it out.

I read that if you buy a Tokina lens on Ebay or from a non authorized dealer Tokina won't repair it if needed. I can't find it now, anyone have info?
Thanks,
Bill
