Another simple way is to take your drill to the hard drive.

I find that a quick trip under my drill press is much easier and quicker. The old hammer method often takes a lot more time and trouble as hard drive frames have become much more damage resistant!
My air chisel works wonders!!!

Do you really? I wouldn't just for that. I hate cleaning guns.

If you have an old hard drive and want to ensure that the residual data on it are not usable, I think it's best to just take the disk apart. First of all, you get an idea of what's in a disk. Second of all, there are some good magnets that you could probably find a use for. You throw away the stuff other than the disk. That is a nicely polished disk of metal which could be used for a nice mirror. When you're done with playing with the mirror, a little sandpaper will do the trick.
OTOH, a quicker solution is just an 8-lb sledge. If you have an anvil, that would help, but lacking that, a good solid rock would work, but lacking a good rock, a paved road will suffice. (I strongly suspect that if you don't have a paved road available, you most likely could find a rock. OTOH, if you have neither a paved road or a rock, you're probably on an ice sheet or permafrost, so just burying the disk would most likely keep it away from prying eyes). The advantage of this solution is that you get some exercise in the processs. I, for one, would benefit from that exercise after all the time I sit on my butt reading UHH.

If you go for the Pacific Ocean (or any other body of water) drill a hole in the case first or loosen the screws holding it together. They've got a fair amount of empty space in them and they may float.
