C'mon. There's no competing traffic in that video. Everyone is going in the same direction. Unrealistic.

I worked in Swindon UK for many years and had to navigate the magic roundabout during rush hour. I must say that as an American driver this scared the hell out of me. I would use the outside circle most of the time. Google the "Magic Roundabout Swindon" Take a look https://youtu.be/6OGvj7GZSIo

When you drive in the UK you must use your turn signals in a roundabout. I very seldom see drivers use them in the US.

I hate roundabouts. Almost as much as I hate snakes.

I was a member of several regional planning commissions who were responsible for dealing with traffic issues when these things were coming into vogue. Roundabouts are not meant to function as a large traffic circle. They are classified as "traffic calming devices" (similar to speed bumps) meant to keep traffic flowing at a slow but steady pace. We had some fairly major roads where rush hour traffic backed up severely due to several traffic lights. Once the lights were replaced with roundabouts, the backups were mostly eliminated...once people got used to them. There's a also an environmental benefit because slow-but-steady moving cars create less emissions than the same number of vehicles in stop-and-go mode.

Exactly, For large traffic intersections WA State is going to a thing call Diverging Diamond Interchange. (see on You Tube) It reduces traffic conflict points and directs traffic with large arrows and notices in the lanes.

All in all I don't mind them but they take little getting used to. Try using one in New Zealand, now that takes a lot of getting used to!

Do a search for "roundabouts," and you'll find articles saying how great they are. Judging by the new ones in Kingston, NY, they aren't great.

We used to have a large traffic circle by the Thruway entrance. Four roads fed into it, and it was large enough that you could enter even if a car had just entered on your left. The new one - a roundabout - is so small that 18-wheelers must use both lanes. If you're waiting to enter, and a car enters on your left, it's too close for you to drive into the circle. The result is a line of cars waiting to enter the roundabout. As if that weren't band enough, cars in the left lane are allowed to make right turns to exit in front of cars in the right lane.

Now we have a brand new roundabout. We used to have traffic lights. Red - stop; green - go. Now we have this confusing roundabout, which people are avoiding by driving out of their way by several miles. I'm glad I found this picture so you can so what it's like. Of course, from the air, it's easier to get a good view and understand it. Down on ground level, with cars entering from every angle, it's very confusing.

It seems to require a lot of real estate too.

A fellow I once knew had the bad habit of driving home from his lodge hall when he shouldn’t have. More than once his wife received a phone call from the local police to come and get him as he slept in his car in the middle of the traffic circle.

These are everywhere in the UK. Over motorway junctions there may be 4 or even 5 lanes. They work fine for us with the universal rule that you give way to traffic coming from your right. In the US this would need to be left.

Our problem is that there is a newer tendency for traffic lights to be installed around the larger islands (circles) when traffic volumes differ considerably between the different entry roads. They slow down traffic adding to pollution.

I have noticed that roundabouts here are not the problem. I appears that the Americans are not courteous when it comes to driving, turn signals are a option on a lot of the vehicles. Rules for roundabouts were never explained and if they were the drivers ignored them. Roundabouts are very logical and very efficient when used properly and the use of common sense.

Except for the non-logical one in Malta and the absurdly non-logical one in the Swindon video

I think that my favorite roundabouts in the UK were the mini roundabouts. They consist of a white dot in the middle of an intersection. The dot could be anywhere from 1 ft to 4 foot in diameter. Can not see them working in the US. No stop signs at an intersection just a dot and maybe a roundabout sign. Look up white dot roundabouts. In the UK to make a right turn you have to go around the dot.
