The famous photographer Elliot Erwitt, I believe has said, it isn't what you
see but how you see it. The improved technology just lets a photographer
record his/her seeing faster.

A good photograph can be made better by just knowing where to stand.

I wonder who does it now. And "M" with auto ISO is not AUTO

Baseball, boxing, car racing, horse racing, track and field.
The poor image quality of pictures taken in the pre-auto days is more a result of film limitations and poor lighting than anything else.

And they kept saying it's the photographer and not the camera.

Henri Cartier-Bresson said the decisive moment must be anticipated because if you wait for it to happen, it’s too late to capture it.

Look at the difference in fatalities per air mile then and now.

The greatest improvement for shooting sports is tracking autofocus. I know the best sports photographers in the old days could follow focus moving subjects, but it is a very difficult technique to master, and now many more photographers can shoot fast moving objects successfully with autofocus.

And I remember, while doing industrial photography, shooting a pack or so of 4x5 Polaroids before shooting 4x5 sheet film just to be sure the exposure and composition were spot on. Now I have all that functionality before taking even one photo. The tools are what they are at the time. Make the best use of them! Good, well composed photos can be taken with a cheappy camera with virtually no features or for that matter a pin hole camera but it is a lot easier to get those good, well composed shots with a modern digital mirrorless camera and high quality lenses. In the end it is the image that is the objective - not the camera that was used.

Artistic skill they do not have but frees the human to work on the artistic skill or composition without the bother of stressing about focus, advancing the film or a myriad of other things.
I do not miss double clutching to shift gears, sticking my arm out the window to signal a turn, struggling to turn the wheel and my father did not miss cranking by hand etc.

If these technologies in photography bother you then you are free to go make your wet glass plates and put them into your view camera then immediately develop them in your wagon. What a concept.

If this were true you would see a lot more, Good images on this site. Why do less talented folk always think it's the camera doing all the work. If I just had a better camera, my pictures would look better. Yes, better equipment might help you capture an image easier but that alone does not make a great image.... So much more to photography than just the camera..

Been around doing this since the 1960"s and been through all the technological advances as an amateur then as a working pro. My skills , knowledge and experience have increased alongside these increases in technology. I embrace all the latest tech to help me realize my vision, better, faster, smarter and with new creative options.

I don't long for the good ole days, even as a cherish all the memories and photographic adventures along the way.

I love slowing down to shoot landscapes, portraits and such, but I also love speeding up to capture professional sports ,athletes ,breaking news and fast wildlife . So yes I love my Sony A1 with 30fps, and 8k video but I also love the 61mp of my A7RIV for breathtaking landscapes, and my 12mp A7SIII for 4k/120fps slow mo.

Use what you love and what serves your needs and be happy. But don't worry about spending more to buy more than you need or can afford. Great that we have so many choices and options to fit all of our different needs.

Don't get caught up in GAS or the latest, fastest, greatest if all you need is good ole reliable.

Cheers

Although a legitimate question, I find humor in the implied objection. Is there also an issue with digital cards that can provide digital files, easily modified in post processing? After all, film images can be modified, albeit taking more time, more chemicals and having fewer options. Or perhaps the lightning fast focus capabilities are no longer a fair feature? My goodness, the cameras in our mobile telephones are slowly reaching photo qualities previously unattainable by some DSLR model cameras. If it's individual skill that's needed to produce the only truly well-taken photograph, then I am going to need to purge a few photographs from my own portfolio....the ones where composition, timing and/or luck had as much to with the results as did any setting on my camera.

I went from film to digatal about 10 yrs ago. Some of the things I like is you can take many more phots without reloading and you can check to see if you captured the picture that you wanted. I have a Pentax K-20, and I am still able to use all my leneses from my film camera. Been very happy with it and don't intend to up grade unless I went to full frame. One person from Nat. Geo. said to forget all the extras because most of the time you won't use them. I do woodworking also but do not want a CNC router to do all the work. I also don't want a car that will drive me around. There have to be some fun things left to do! Just because a $500 Modle T would handle bad roads and mud like a $40,000 SUV dose not mean that I want to go back there but I also don't need a $80,000 to get me to town. Well that is enough, didn't mean to run on, SW

I'm having a blast with my canon r6, trying all sorts of photography....BIF, macros, low light stuff. For me, it's fun to be able to get shots that are not possible with my iphone. Phone cameras are so darn good these days and everyone with little or no experience can get snapshots that are remarkable...no high skill level required! Whatever type of photography that gets me out of the house, into nature and enjoying the day...learning new skills, slowing down, listening, watching....it's all good.
