It's a fine image. Totally black birds are as thought as totally white birds to expose correctly.

Suspect "thought" = "tough". I agree. Haven't got many good shots of Black birds. One pair of flying Ravens in the NM mountains came out Silver.

PS: They are actually mostly grey. I was surprised when a ranger in Yellowstone passed around a wing.

Might be settings vs. camera. Have you tried spot metering on the bird with EV about -1.5?
