Any thoughts on what is going on with my printer? I went to change one of the black cartridges (smaller cartridge). This printer contains two black cartridges, the 2nd one is larger. I have changed the cartridges before without any issues. This time I get an Error 1681. Same ink tank installed in printer. But its not! This cartridge will only fit this slot, the other black cartridge will only fit in its designated slot. So, I'm thinking I have a bad cartridge, even though its new. So I get another one and install it. Same issue. This goes on four a total of four black cartridges. Same code, same issue. I tried getting through to Canon Tech support. No good. Can't get past the robo menu. They can't locate my phone number. So, I register again. Call again.....STILL can't locate my number. That is as far as I get with Canon Support. I uninstall the printer and reinstall. Still same code, same issue. I apologize for the long explanation. The short of it is. I can't get it to accept the one black cartridge. I can't clear the error, I can't get through to Canon for help. Before I went to change the cartridge, be cause of low ink, it worked fine. After that nothing but Erro Codes. I checked the number on the cartridge(s), and they are what the printer calls for. Any help or suggestions will be most appreciated.
Thank you for that information. I tried it and that didn't solve the issue. Must be hardware issue. Looks like I need another printer. I appreciate the quick response. Thank you again.

Yes my cannon did the same thing. I replaced the black cartridges and error. Even put the old ones back in error. As far as I could figure out I supposed to need a print head. New printer. Lol. I cannot complain. Printer served me well for many years.
Your printer is not reading the chip in the new cartridges…it’s not the carts problem, it’s the printer mother board having a brain fart….
New printer or you replace the mother board.

I also have the same printer and it’s been churning along without issue for about 4 (?) years. I know eventually it’ll have to be replaced, but hopefully on my terms.

I also have the same printer and have had nothing but problems; random multiple error codes, random refusing to print with no explanation, random connectivity problems, etc.
I'm so disgusted with this printer that I will never buy any Canon product again.
I suggest that you try cleaning the print head and cartridge contacts. They can get covered in ink and will cause error messages. Try that if you haven’t already. You can look up the error message on line to see what means. I had the same printer for years and had no problems.
I looked it up. That means the cyan cartridge needs to be replaced. Check your ink levels. that might fix it. You can also do a total reset of the printer. If you go to the canon community there is a question band answer about your exact question that you posted here.
Did any of that help? I hope so.
