I have a problem which appeared recently and I'm unable to solve. I have a Nikon D850 and am using a Godox TT685 flash. When I turn the flash on and take a photo the flash flashes twice and then the photo is taken on the third "normal" flash. I've been shooting for over 60 years and I have taught photography but I can't get rid of those annoying pre-flashes. This had never happened previously using the same camera and flash for maybe a year.

As you know, sometimes settings get changed unintentionally. Have you made sure that neither of the flash nor the camera is set to red eye reduction mode? If your flash offers a reset function, perhaps trying that could help.

One of my first attempts was to press the "reset" button combination on the flash and no luck. After reading your suggestion I searched the manual and online and could find no red-eye reduction mode which I usually recommend against in my classes and have never purposely used.

As a far-out possibility I replaced the batteries with a freshly charged set.

Are you going to keep us in suspense?

Did that solve the issue?

By any chance do you have high speed sync (HSS) enabled on the camera?

Continuing, I've replaced camera batteries with freshly charge versions and tried flash in both i-TTL and manual mode. I'm still getting two pre-flashes. Exposure looks good though. Oh, thanks Rab-Eye for your quick response. If I solve this I'll let all know what I did but it is still unsolved. I have three manual flashes I should try.

OK, went downstairs to the studio and grabbed a Godox TT600 manual flash it does NOT pre-flash so I guess that eliminates the problem coming from the camera.

I am curious, what if you fire the flash by pushing the button on the flash? Does it fire once or more?

I press the button and it DID NOT flash. Took the flash off and the button worked. Put the flash back on and everything was back to normal. Now I cannot remember if in all this, at least 2 week process if I had removed the flash before but all is well and it works as it should. Thank you all for following and suggesting. Maybe age is beginning it's effects I'm 78 and maybe suddenly stupid.

That is weird...I never had that issue with the D850 and the TT685N. Are you using the N version?

Well, then a happy ending

Yes and no problems before. I had the Nikon SB600 and it was physically broken and I didn't want to spend the money for an new Nikon flash. I'd been using Godox in my studio (nearly defunct now) and had liked them so I replaced the 600 with the TT685 which has very similar specs to the Nikon and have loved it. I do think it is more me than my equipment.
