My Fire (Amazon tablet) died...

I tried repeatedly to get it to reboot by holding down the on-off button for 60 secs. No good.

So, take a hammer to it, throw it in the trash, and buy a new one? Or is there another option?.....😐

Do you have the free Kindle app on your computer to access your books etc.?

And if you are into Kindle and the Fire(s) you should replace it with another or the app on a laptop or tablet that is handy to carry around.

I started with Nook, and Barnes and Noble are making it hard to stay loyal - but I literally have a couple of thousand books, magazines etc. on my account (and a 100 or so Kindle books/magazines on the app on my desktop and my Samsung 10.1" Nook customized tablet.

According to an article I read some of the in-crowd recommend downloading all your books, magazines etc into a thumb drive and get one of the good converter apps so you can read them on any major e-reader platform.

Mine "died" and I couldn't get it to reboot by holding the button down. What I ended up doing was putting the charger on it, left it plugged in, then hold the button down. Most of the time it came back up.

I had the Kindle app on my previous laptop but don't have it on my current one (don't really know why not!). Thanks for reminding me.

I never got totally comfortable with the Fire the way I did with my laptop (but that's also true of my wife's IPad). One thing I never learned is backing up the content. The books I bought from Amazon are safe because they're in the Amazon cloud, but I guess the documents I loaded in are gone. Not really a big problem - I loaded it up with a bunch of stuff that I never looked at again!

A good tech might be able to get all the stuff off the drive, unless it was the drive that died.

There is the possibility that the battery has died. I bought a replacement battery from Amazon. Not that hard to install. If I remember correctly, it came with instructions and a couple of tools to open case. Still ticking after 4 or 5 years.

Check on eBay for a refurbished reader. I bought an Oasis for about 1/2 price and it is going on three years since I made the purchase. FWIW

Mine did the same thing. If battery, my wasn't, can be replaced. If not, it's probably gone. I wanted the downloads I saved, books will be in your Amazon library on the web, no problem there. My computer store which saved several computers and a Samsung pad said nothing they could do, something internal. Will probably cost your ~$50 to find out?

Any tablet will play Kindle and Amazon stuff. I use my Ipad after my Kindle died and it works fine. Just go to your amazon account and set up download to another platform.
Good luck,
Dave

Thank you all for replying. Amazon seems to have a trade-in option that gives you a discount on a new tablet. I'm gonna kiss my data goodbye and take a look at that option. Next is the decision of what size.....

OK, hint as you get older bigger screens get nicer. My Nook is a 10.1 and my desktop monitor is a 32.

You're right! Bigger screens are nicer for us old folks (especially since I'm having some eye problems). But weight and portability are also issues. I never had a smart phone until recently. My take-along device had been my six-inch Fire tablet and it fit nicely into my trouser pockets. But now that I have a smart phone the tablet will be more for home use. That argues for a larger one...

And another thing, now that I no longer have to dress for work, well "If you don't like what I wear, don't look!"

So I go for pants and shorts with cargo pockets (can hold a pretty big e-reader) and sometime a photographer/fishing vest with lots of pockets and if needed a camera bag with a comfortable padded shoulder strap. Add a fedora for a hat and I am comfortable, eyes shaded, lots of pockets to distribute stuff so I don't have to carry it in my hands and I am set to be an anti-fashionista old guy out to shop or take pictures.

I also wear those nice comfortable semi-custom diabetic shoes with thick soles and memory foam liners that the podiatrist at Kaiser writes me a Rx for every other year or so. My feet are a full size apart and that is what I get. Then for hard use or out at the Railway Museum (safety shoes required to work around the streetcars and trains) I go to a good uniform shop that caters to cops, firefighters, paramedics, mailmen etc. and they will do the same thing only in a pair of zip up the side, steel toed, punji stake insert combat boots (black so they go with my conductor's uniform).

Us retired old guys can dress to be comfortable and practical and if people don't like the look, well too bad. And I haul it around in a dark red SUV with comfortable seats and easy to get in and out over sized doors.
