I have offered and am organizing an entire room/ofc of an friend who passed last year. His career was teaching photography. Needless to say this is a major task. I found this out yesterday when I spent 1/2 day starting to sort through stuff and his wife told me he never threw away anything. Fortunately that included every box his cameras and lenses came in.
I called KEH and spoke to a women in the resale buying dept. I wasn’t happy at all with her help and made an excuse to get off the phone. Very different from 6 mos ago when I called about this same thing.
This being said I am open to any and all suggestions everyone may have. I offered to help as my friends wife of 54yrs is in her 80’s and hasn’t a clue about all his gear.
I appreciate your advice.

If I die I don't want my wife's friend donates my camera collection to the college. The college kids don't appreciate them any way. They think you give them junk.
I think the dead man would thank you in his grave if you get the most money out of his collection for his wife.

And a smart man will liquidate his collection BEFORE he passes. That's exactly what I'm doing with my Lionel train collection right now. And the side benefit is that I can fund my GAS!

A decade or two ago there was a guy in my town who died. He had collected movie cameras and had a home museum. There was not much of a market for movie cameras so the collection eventually went to a museum in Maine. Not a lot of money was involved but the estate got a tax deduction for a donation.

Wise words—There are collectors out there, and don’t let them beat you up on value!!!

For camera gear that is sixty years or older, it's usually the cameras which are worth money, not the tripods and lighting equipment.

I looked over the comments and could have missed something but UHH has a market place, right?

Why not list there and see what happens.

Just a suggestion when you start shipping cameras and similarly sized items. Under no circumstance ship them in just their original cardboard cartons, they will never make it to the buyer. The cardboard boxes are far too weak to stand the abuse the package will receive en route. Go to Walmart's office section. They have a great selection of very sturdy corrugated boxes for shipping at really low prices. One in particular, I think it is the 10"X12" box, will handle about any camera except the old Graflex newspaper-type size cameras or similar. They have larger boxes available also. Wrap the camera or lens in bubble wrap until you have to force it into the shipping box and it will stand a very good chance of getting to the buyer intact. I ship a lot of German steinkrugs this way and have never had one arrive broken or cracked.

I did one a couple of months ago and it went well. You show the buyer at KEH the equipment so they see it first hand. They give you a price and accept or decline on the spot. It's by appt. and of course you need to be set up for video conference. Tell the buyer you want a price for each individual piece before you start.

You'll be shocked at the cost of shipping. I had a buyer for a heavy tripod, but cost of shipping slowest/cheapest was nearly $70.00 - nearly half the cost of the tripod. If your buyers will pay shipping, I guess it's worth shipping.

BTW when I inquired on this forum about these purchasing sites, consensus was that MBP pays better, and they pay shipping. If there is a college nearby that offers photography classes, you may be able to sell some equipment to students. I know several college fellows who got into film a couple of years ago and really enjoy the old way.

I believe “State of Mind”
is important in these situations. Are you most concerned about making money or disposing of the cameras and gear for your friend? We have had great success with eBay but I had to separate myself from many of the deals to be satisfied with results.

He must meant getting the most money out of the collection. Disposing is easy simply put them in the trash can.

I had some old cameras and accessories I needed to get rid of when we sold our home and moved into a condo: I called the school district in Northern Virginia and discovered there were a couple of high schools that taught photo basics in the area. Some of the stuff went there but cameras and what was left was donated to a local museum.

I am a camera collector and sales consultant. I would be more than happy to help you and maybe offer to buy the whole batch and then sell it myself. I own 50+ cameras, I have a half dozen tripods, 10,000 Watt Seconds of light from the 50's-70's, etc. etc. so I know a lot about old equipment and prices. Send me pictures and descriptions of the stuff and I would be more than happy to aid you in the sale of this stuff or as I said maybe offer to buy it all myself. exposurephoto99@gmail.com

Yes, if I were in the pickle of the OP, I'd consider putting the chore of sorting the old photography gear in the hands of an experienced individual willing to do it for me.
