Number 1 looks best to me with the roof on the right my eyes are drawn to the entire scene, roof on the left eyes are drawn to the roof. That's what I see being right eye dominant.

To me, there’s a big difference: In the first, the eyes move to the right; and in the second the eyes move to the left, which is unnatural to me for this photo. Therefore, the first offering is the winner.

This is kind of a sneaky one, it has element for all the mentioned reasons by others. Conflicting composition elements. I pick slightly #1 because my eyes move from the black horse to the lighter horse and roof on the right. In #2 my eye fixes on the two white elements and stops and never makes it across to the dark horse or darker trees at the right edge. My mind will stay with only the left side. In #1 I'll take in the entire image more as one usually wants.

I think because I read left to right, I like the second one best. The grey horse draws my eye, then the roof carries me on through the image.

I've read about and studied composition almost my entire life, I'm a retiring Art and Photography teacher.
IMHO #1 is the better photo for the following reasons;
Due to the way we read, left to right, our eyes naturally move from left to right, our eyes are also drawn to the brightest areas of the picture. With composition our eyes also follow certain lines in a picture, they can be actual lines as in the roof lines (up from the left, down to the right) or implied lines (the direction the horses are facing, to the left). Subliminally, your eye is directed to follow up the left roof line to the peak then down the brightest part of the roof to the white horse which is facing to the left. Which brings your eye back to the darker area and the circle begins again. It's a comfortable movement. The purpose of GOOD composition is to keep the viewers eye interested in the image by using these subliminal techniques, collectively refered as "eye movement".
I've told my classes many times, the job of an artist is to keep the viewer interested in your work, if someone looks at your work and goes on to the next piece, the artist didn't do a good job. Now consider the Mona Lisa and how people can study that picture for hours, That's a good job.

First glance #2. I think because my eyes were drawn to the white horse and "reading" left to right the barn and black horse. Just seemed more natural and intuitive to me, however small point as either way the photo is great.

My choice is #1. My first thought when looking at the photo was it's "Black and White"... and then noticed the horses were also 'black and white' in that order. Both equally good shots, but that's the reason I prefer #1.

My choice is strongly #1. I think the barn is the primary object and it just looks un-natural in #2. The horses, the secondary object, look better facing like I read in #2. So the perfect photo flips the horses, but not the barn.
