On the road to success, who but the successful brought their camera.

Probably better than being on the road to Booger Hole.
But one should still take their camera.

A camera is just a device that can record an image. The pioneers of cameras/photography didn't have what we have. Remember as a kid, making pinhole cameras. A shoebox with a pinhole on one end and the other end cutting out a rectangle and gluing wax paper on that end to see the image. We didn't have a way to record the image though. Back then the shutter and shutter speed was the photographer taking off the lens cap, counting the time, then putting the lens cap back on.

In my view a camera is a camera regardless of what it looks like or what else it can do. It still records an image.

Success is the photographer. Failure is the equipment.

I often see a poster apologizing for showing an image from their cellphone because their real camera wasn’t available. What constitutes a “real” camera?

A real camera takes photographs. Some are better than others at doing that, but they are all cameras.

A Camera takes a Photograph

A photograph is something taken with a camera (any) period...a picture can be artwork, drawing or a painting, etc..

A true photograph doesn't need to be explained.

Precisely. TRUE! That is why we don't need the inclusion of all the (often stupid) captions that accompany photographs that are posted. I just wish we could let the photographs stand on their own two feet. We should be allowed the courtesy of being allowed to see the pic and interpret it as each of us sees fit. I object to being told (through captions) what to think.

I sometimes feel that more time is spent in coming up with a caption than making the photo worthwhile. Perhaps we need a section of photos without captions and without comments. JUST PHOTOGRAPHS.

Some captions are funny...

I still view the image on its own merit, regardless of any caption.
A caption doesn't force me to interpret the image any differently.

It is possible to make good photographs with almost any kind of camera but the odds of getting a great photo is improved if you have the right equipment. I have made rather good photos with pinhole cameras and Instamatic cameras. It is a question of having a good eye. If you do not have a good eye no camera will help you.

Having said that, using a real camera whether it be the latest digital wonder, a view Camera or a nice medium format film camera is a real pleasure to use. Having the right equipment for the task at hand certainly improves the chances for success.

Cellphones provide none of this pleasure. With regard to photography cellphones are the equivalent of my long lost Instamatic camera. Indeed cell phones provide me with not much pleasure for anything. Mine remains off except for a few hours a year. Cellphones are not good computers, telephones, or cameras but can be pressed into service when necessary. Indeed I have taken a few utilitarian photos with my phone and they served the purpose.

An artist can capture beauty with any camera. The rest of us need a real camera.

Everyone has their opinion, don't they.
Some simply more hard-set than others.

Taking selfies with my laptop is SO cumbersome.
