Hi fhayes
Thanks for checking out the peregrine shots and for the comment. For these shots I was using a canon 500mm F4.0 IS USM lens with a 2X teleconverter to get 1000mm focal length. In several of the shots I still needed to crop the image to bring the birds in closer. The 2X does degrade the image a small amount but not very noticeably. The tricky part with this combination is getting focus correct and not giggling the camera when taking the shot since the depth of field is fairly small. Also at a 1000mm focal length atmospheric turbulence starts to become more of a factor depending on the day. The 500mm is a excellent lens which produces a really clean image (see the following link to see an example, this shot is from another group from Morro Bay that I just posted earlier today).

Hi fhayes br Thanks for checking out the peregrine... (show quote)

I'm even more impressed! With 1000mm I didn't expect that high of quality considering the distance from you to the birds eve without the crop. The feathers for one example, I can almost touch them!
You are one excellent photographer!

Hi fhayes
Thanks for the complement. I find if I take enough shots I get a few good ones.

While at Morro Bay last week I was able to get a number of shots of Peregrine falcons taking to the air. Most of the shots are of juvenile Peregrine Falcons just learning to fly. In multiple cases they would open there wings and then chicken out. Eventually they would take off sometimes with encouragement from mom or a sibling. All questions, comments and suggestions are welcome.

This is the third set of shots from this trip.
The first is of the lunar eclipse

The second is of the junior Falcons feeding

Great falcon shots! If you have shots of the adults and can read any of the band number/letters I encourage you to submit them to the bird banding laboratory at www.reportband.gov.

Hi birdpix
Thanks for checking out the falcon images and for the comment. Even though you can see bands on the adults they where to far away to read the bands even with 1000mm focal length.

The band on the right leg is the federal band and is virtually unreadable unless the bird is in hand. The left leg band is the local bander’s ID and should be readable as the letters and or numbers are large and are repeated around the band. The bands are also two colors and are reported, for example 40AC, black over green.

Hi birdpix
Thanks for the info. There are a couple of shots in this set and the one on peregrines feeding where you can see that the mama peregrine has been tagged but I couldn't make out more than that.
