Is it weatherproof? All my equipment, including my flash, is weather proof. My camera has been hit with dust in the sand dunes, pouring rain, and ocean splashes and salt spray. My shooting and shooting for my wife cannot wait for the weather to change. And my camera is up for the job. I think you have the right idea of the right tool for the right job. But I cannot afford to own all four options so I settled for one that covers my needs the best. Again I recognize the Sony RX10 mIV as a great camera, but to change out the lens I would have to buy a new camera.

It is weathersealed. I bought it specifically for kayaking and that was a big reason. I don’t take it in salt water because I’ve had a few weathersealed cameras die from salt spray. For that I use my Olympus E-M1X with the 40-150 pro lens and 2x teleconverter in my Outex cover.

Although the Sony RX10 mIV is a great camera, I still want the chance that I can purchase the 150-400 f4.5 lens for my system and my retirement shooting. One needs a body that will take an interchangeable lens. I hope to upgrade to an E-M1X mkII and/or an E-M1 mkIV when they put the 30mp sensor in them. It is still nice to know that they have weatherproofed the Sony.

I only carry my phone if my wife is not with me; which is not often. I have never taken a picture with it. Don't even know how. I am proud of that fact.

I could have written that, it's me. (My wife takes phone pics.) Not sure I'm proud of it but I'm not embarrassed by it either. It is what it is!

When my Canon 5Dc becomes too heavy or too uncomfortable to use, I'll give up photography. I lived many years without a camera (around the first 20 or so) and I can live many more if I find it necessary. I'm 90 though, not sure that I have "many more" left, maybe just "a few more". :-)

I've had cameras since I bought one through the PX while in Korea as a 2d Lt, 1953 when I was 22, first a Voightlander, then a Contax. Had a Nikon 35mm for a while (took my best pic with it, a Sonoma beach, hangs on my wall in a 13x19 print), then switched to the above mentioned Canon digital. Harry

I think both the cell and the fancy camera have their place.

I like the heft of my Nikon D610 with my 24-70 lens. Don’t mind carrying it around.

My iPhone 11S is always on me to capture little videos and it’s not bad for portraits and those spur-of-the-moment capture shots.

Appreciating what I have.

A lot of us want to create the best photographs possible. For that reason we can become overly consumed with our camera, lenses and all of the accompanying stuff. I know, I have done that. Been there, done that.

On our recent trip to SE Asia, i took none of my multitude of cameras and lenses. I simply used my smart phone. To be honest, I enjoyed our trip a heck of lot more by not having to schlep stuff around. Some of you have seen my photographs made on that trip. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those images...to a point.

It all comes down what we want to photograph and the eventual presentation of our images. I wouldn't want to print my smart phone pictures to 16X20 and I wouldn't think that taking photos of wildlife would be likely.

It isn't that I don't have gear...probably some of the finest glass and bodies made at the time I bought them. But is it about seeing and recording or is it about parading gear instead of photographs?

How would one know they're not a successful photographer without having tried the best equipment?

One clue would be they have not generated enough income to buy or even rent the best equipment. That would be a hint at lack of success.

Like it or not technology is changing our world. You can scoff at the changes or take advantage of it. The choice is yours.

We claim a full frame is better then a no full fram and a 50 megapixel is better than a 20. So is a good phone better than a cheep phone. Every thing has its place. The next question is do I take better pictures than you?

I have taken some fairly good pictures. I have taken some really awful pictures. Are all your pictures consistently good?

No. You do not. Because you are not there.

A good photograph is one that communicates the ISO, megapixels and brand.

May not have the same equipment, but really appreciate what I have too.

Everyone's favorite Utubers, Tony & Chelsea, have a video below of them both online shopping from the ugly-bin at KEH for 1 body and two lenses each for a combined total of $1000 per bundle (with their own KEH online discount code). Of course, both selected all full-frame equipment. They went out in three shooting situations and present numerous results along with commentary of using less than today's cutting edge models.

$1000 that's a lot of money to put in something from the ugly bin.

I believe you are good for at least a couple hundred thousand more great pics. You have owned several great cameras, and I would love to see your work.
Thank you.
