You buy both, the best available of each. The highest evolution of XQD is called CFexpress. Basic CF cards top out at the Sandisk “Extreme Pro”.

While CFExpress fits the same form factor as XQD it’s not the “highest evolution”. It’s a completely different thing. The only compatibility is the physical design of the card. As for his second slot, that fits an SD card, not a CF card.

I do not take video, or a lot of photographs during an outing or in quick succession so I went with a high capacity SSD Card. I have had no issues.

Neither. Instead of getting an XQD or a Compact Flash (which the D850 does not accept) get a CF Express card. CFE looks just like an XQD but it is much, much faster. You will appreciate this when uploading images, provided you have the correct hardware to do so. Best of luck.

I have a 120 xqd and a 128 sd II and I have not filled both cards yet and I am an air show guy. Because the D850 is not native CFE there is a slight reduction in write speed. I have not personally tested this but you can find the articles. As pointed out the read speed would be an advantage. My load times for 1000 frames are a few minutes so I do not feel the read speed advantage is necessary at this time. For right now I am passing on cfe but I have done the firmware update just in case. Good luck what ever you decide to do. The D850 is a great camera.

Well it’s good news that the top shelf SLR has left the old CF cards behind. As to the XQD slot, are you saying that unlike the Z the D850 has never been upgraded to use CFexpress cards ? For my basic Z6 it was just a FW update. Is the D850’s XQD slot not updatable ?

I said no such thing. Yes the D850 and the Z cameras can be updated to use the CFExpress with a firmware update but CFExpress is not just a newer version of XQD. You’ll need a different reader for CFExpress.

Acoarst one needs an appropriate reader. Need of a proper reader isn’t a question of camera compatibility though.

My Z is a refurb and arrived already at FW3.00 so I put a CFexpress”B” in it. There was a reader at B&H that handled SD thru CFexpress”B” for $160. For $80 I got one that reads only CFexpress”B”. But the FW updated camera is fully reverse compatible. That is what leads me to use that term you objected to, evolution.

My camera has a card slot that has seen gradual stages of progress in the cards it can use, so I call that progress evolution.

Get the XQD, It will last the life of the camera.

Thaz what I did. A warning before you suffer sticker shock: my card and reader were $240 at BH. 128gb card and a very non versatile reader.

If you don’t already own xqd cards, why would you even consider purchasing dead technology that is essentially useless in anything other than a couple of old cameras? For those old enough to remember, that’s like buying a Betamax when VCR outsold it 100 to 1.

I suppose that means my old film cameras are useless and I should stop using film as IT is soooo outdated tech

100%

Just because something is old or new tech comes along does NOT make it useless as some may assume wrongly or we would not be using FILM

Not really a valid comparison. There’s really no price difference and CFExpress is much more viable moving forward. All your 35mm film cameras can use the same film. Going forward it’s much more likely new cameras will support CFExpress than XQD.
