Make a list of what the D850 can do that the D810 can not. How long before the sale of photos taken as a result of those features pay for the D850? For straight-up shooting with the same lenses, I doubt you'll notice any difference between photos taken with the D810 and the D850.
You might be one who is obsessed with the "nth" degree of perfection, and knowledge of there being a higher level of camera out there than the one you've got will stick in your craw. If that is you, by all means, get the D850, sell the D810, and, no more "sticking in the craw"; you can sleep peacefully at night knowing you've got the best DSLR ever made.

I hope it's legit. Please keep us informed. As for mirrorless, I don't see why everyone is pushing mirrorless like it's sent from God. The D850 is a fantastic camera and will last you decades.

I find the Nikon D850 currently at $500. off very tempting. it expires on 05/30ish. I have a D810 and a D750 both with about 30,xxx clicks on them....still a lot of life left. My concerns are B&H is out of stock with availability in 2-4 weeks. Their rep stated: no eta...awaiting further inventory insight from manufacturer company. What does that mean? Amazon shows 3 available. I also saw somewhere that Nikon is having production problems on lenses since the move to Thailand. Neither of these comments are making me feel confident about purchasing an almost $2500 product from Nikon at this time. Would anyone care to comment and provide their insight, please. I'm sitting precariously on the fence and need a shove in either direction. Thank you!

I have D800 and D850. It is a terrific camera. On sale for $2,199.95 (refurbished).
Nikon has a 4 day refurbished camera sale, ends tomorrow May 25th. The only difference is you don't get the gold box and there is only a 6 month warranty. I have bought several Nikon refurbished cameras, they are probably new. I ran a shutter test on them and the count was "Zero". Please see attached link

It's legit. It is a Nikon price reduction, so all authorized dealers have it on sale.

DSLRs are going obsolete to Mirrorless as fast as the internal combustion engine is to the electric car. Which is a long way off.

If Al Gore had asked people what they wanted, we wouldn't have the internet available on our iPhones.

I had no trouble when I ordered my D850 from B&H, but that was a while back. I also had ordered a 70-200mm 2.8 lens in late January that was backordered with the "2 to 4 weeks" notice. That went on for nearly three months. I'm also waiting on some Lee filters that have been backordered for nearly the same amount of time.

As long as you have the 810 my advise would be to work with that and just be patient on the 850. I don't know why the plant in Thailand would be holding things up, unless it has to do with the broader disruption of trade caused by. the pandemic. That disruption extends to Nikon's ability to get the raw materials needed for lens and camera manufacture as well as shipping finished product. The Thai plant has been there for a while. I remeber driving by it on a tour bus in 2013 and was happy to see where a lot of my gear has come from!

Having pangs of a GAS attack myself, and the only thing keeping me from jumping on to the D850 ship is that XQD card. This appears to be a form factor that never really thrived. I could buy two or so and never worry about it (never filled the 32Gb cards in my D810, and never had a card fail), but it just rubs me the wrong way.

Plus...I can wait a year or so to see if there’s a replacement.

Firmware updates have opened the opportunity to use other (although more expensive) memory cards in the XQD slot. Or you can use just the SD card without much penalty in performance, depending on how you use the camera.

The bigger issue for me is just the file size. I have found that all of that available resolution is just really needed or beneficial in lots of cases. But the camera is great to use, if you are willing to take the time to learn it.

Here's some of their regular 'fair and balanced' analysis of mirrorless myths from the team at Tony Northrup ...

To me it means that Nikon is being careful about their inventory. They don't want to have a bunch of D850 and they can't sell. They want a small inventory so they can keep saying that the D850 is not discontinued but without having to really make them.

and, the prices WILL be going DOWN .....

Wake Up.. I don't see Nikon or cannon developing any more DSLR cameras, only Mirrorless. I'm not saying they are obsolete just saying the future is Mirrorless. Now with the newer camera models from Sony, more frame rates per second and spot on focus tracking to go with it. Not to mention all of the new mirrorless lens coming out this last year and more on the way. If I want to shoot wildlife, do I chose, 7 frames per second, or 20 or 30 frames per second. DSLR prices will continue to drop. Hey I'm 15 grand plus into Nikon DSLR camera equipment, but the bleeding has to stop, or at least go a different direction........What would a used D850 sale for in a year from now?? I'm not knocking the camera, I have one and it's the best I've owned. Remember when they thought the F6 was the Best camera ever??? You can purchase a mint condition one now for about $300.. Just saying.

Nope the price won't go down because they don't have a big inventory they need to get rid off. Just enough to put them on the line up. Did you see Nikon drop the price of the F6?
