Selective color hasn't been on the challenge list for years, so let's give it a go. Ansel Adams selectively colored by dodging and burning bringing out the saturation of some colors and desaturating others. Most often considered a black and white image with one color as a focal point. It's possible to create the effect in Lightroom alone, any program that will do layers, photoshop and some other editing programs with a "selective color" feature. There are many articles - one by Digital Photography school on How to Use Selective Color takes you through the steps in Lightroom. Digital Blog and others (neither are sites endorsed by UHH because UHH does not endorse sites). Mr. Google can direct you to many simple tutorials using different programs.

This image was done totally in Lightroom. DUH, I didn't know it was possible and I previously exported to other programs if I wanted selective color.

So dig in, pick a simple image and show us the impact of "Selective Color".

Hi Pat,

Great topic and example. I haven't been able to participate much due to some personal struggles but things are looking up and I'm hoping to be able to get back to photography again. I have a few to contribute, I hope they are what you are looking for.

Hello everyone! Nice to be back again. April has been a traumatic month for me and my family. Almost lost my brother to cancer but he's doing well. Not so much for my uncle who passed away 2 weeks ago from cancer. Also almost lost one of my dogs to health issues as well. But she's recovering. What a rollercoaster ride these last 5 weeks has been. Anyway, all's well so far and life’s coming back to normal (almost). Nice to see all these lovely photos in this challenge and the pet/animal challenge. I’ll post a few as soon as I can find some images on my hard drive. I have a ton of pet pics but not so much selected color images. But we’ll see what I can find. Nice to be back again on UH.

Here’s one for today that worked out well without any editing. This was a shot from the 9/11 Memorial in NYC.

Well, I dunno Pat. My head hurts. There's lots of wonderful inspiration here (and among it, I like your swirly one P 7). I did a bit of additional reading, but stuff seems to have got stuck between my ears - or perhaps between my eyeballs. So here's something a bit different that I picked up along my play path. It's not conformable with your directions, but I like it, and I wouldn't have got there without your challenge. So thanks for that! The diagonal bottom right marks the bottom of my kitchen window.

Basic problem - I never bothered to master layers and masks! And I'm a lazy learner

p.11 Oh, Ron - SO PROUD of you and thanks so much for all the effort you put in. I like this very very much. It's a wonderful creation. You exercised the brain, proved you CAN still learn and delighted all of us with the results!!
