I'm looking for some advice . . . I'll be going to South Africa and outlying islands in the spring. Although I use a Canon 7D for my photography, I am not sure I want to for this trip. Reason: bulk!
With my 7D, I will need to bring my 17-40L, 24-105L and 100-400L. Don't really want to bring all this for safaris and such.
I am seriously looking at purchasing the new SX50HS . . . wide angle, mid-range, telephoto . . . it's all there, albeit with some constraints (although minor).
I welcome any comments and suggestions from everyone. Thanks.

Are you kidding? This kind of opportunity begs to use the best photography equipment you have. Yes, I know that lugging a lot of equipment around can be a pain but this is exactly the type of opportunity that I'd want my best along for the ride. If you are seriously thinking about taking that SX whatever instead of a Canon DSLR with L series glass then I think you should sell all your stuff and just settle with the SX whatever camera.
I was in Africa last February, and found that a bean bag was wonderful for stability, especially for telephoto shots. You can carry it empty for weight considerations, and fill it with beans when you get there.

Thank-you. Just awesome!
Thank you...I hope I've helped...I personally think the SX40 is one of the best bridge cameras out there!
   Quite a few of us feel the same!!
I used to own the 7D which is a wonderful camera. I tried out the SX 50 and if your aim is to take "snap shots" it should work well. If you are taking professional shots I would not waste my time.
The reason that Canon achieves 24-1200 is because of the tiny sensor size. You won't be able to blow up the shot beyond about 16 inches. I was very impressed with some shots I took and when I enlarged them, the pixels showed up.
Since I used to live in South Africa, I know it well, I personally would take my A77, 16-105 lens and a 70-300mm lens from Tamron which I will do when I visit again soon hopefully. I owned one of those for the Canon and it was superior. However, Canon's 70-300mm is light and it would suit the purpose. There is no reason to take the 40mm lens in my opinion. The scenes in the Cape are some of the best in the world. Enjoy

As an SX30IS user, I would go with this as my next backup camera. The reviews on Amazon convince me of its value.
However, the full-range f2.8 offered by Panasonic, is also very appealing.

I would point out that the SX40 with the hack installed will save in raw, as all small Canons do. The sx 50 has several advantages, external flash, and remote shutter release among others.
The SX40 also has external flash (hot shoe is under a cover right above the viewfinder) and with the hack it has a remote release capability also!!
The SX50 however has improved the shot-to-shot time significantly though so I am considering upgrading from my SX40.

I have a Canon SX40 whose lens is 2.7 @ 24mm and 5.8 @ 840mm (full telephoto) and find it is an ideal camera package... Instead of neck strap, I made a shoulder sling strap that is great for a lot of walking around... By far the best all-around cam-lens combo I have ever had...
Now there is the new SX50 that goes over 1000mm, but not as fast of lens as the 40... To me, the difference between the two (40 & 50) is not worth the additional price... I find the 40's lens of 840mm is even far more than I really need (unless I want to show off)... Even at a hand-held position at full tele, the images are clear...
So - in short I would recommend the SX40 over the SX50...
But, check both out before you make up your mind...

I also have the SX40 and agree with Don. Do look at the reviews. While the SX50 is slightly better in some areas the SX40 is still the choice in side by side comparisons.
I've purchased two Canon SX40s... because my wife got insanely jealous when I was consistently coming back home with more AND better photos than she was getting with her pricey Nikon DSLR... plus... I could carry my SX40 in a fanny pack, including it's built-in 840mm optical zoom, tote around a much lighter weight tripod, while freeing both hands and eliminating the weight of a bulky backpack. Been there, done that. I'd strongly advise considering the SX40.

nice shots, wonder how much better they would look if you used a 7d
ROFL...you know they would be better ;-) I have a Canon DSLR and a Pentax DSLR...however...sometimes I just feel like traveling a little lighter :-D
Hi I know it's a little off the subject, here but how do you like the 24-105 lens on the 7d I was thinking of buying one. Thank you in advance

Look forward to pics from Safari....
I love the 24-105 on my 7D! Just came back from the inaugural cruise aboard the Celebrity Reflection; started in Amsterdam and ended in Barcelona. This was the only lens I took and it worked wonderfully. It's not the fastest lens, but worked well for me in all cases but a couple. Just did some adjustment in Aperture where required. I highly recommend it.
