Folks are too interested in what everyone else is doing or not doing. If your camera has all the options- Jpeg, Raw and several automatic exposure options, consider that there is time and a place for all of them. As most folks know, RAW enables more post-processing options so If you feel that you are gonna require maximized correctional abilities, by all means, shoot in RAW. The photographer's ability to make MANUAL camera adjustments in limited time frames, such as sports action shots, will determine the need for automatic or programmed exposure control.
As for myself, I've been shooting professionally for years and have no issues with exposure control, however, for me SOOTC is not an EGO issue. I use whatever, mode is needed to get the job done efficiently. The client doesn't care HOW I made the shots as long as they are good and he or she receives them on time.
So many folks are way too preoccupied with microscopic technicalities. They engage in endless arguments on topics that would only be important, significant, or understandable to a computer, optical, mechanical engineer or scientist. Some of this is taking away from their artistry and joy of photography. Perhaps we need a special section here for the extremely drilled-down high-tech subject matter.
