My wife and I are planning to fly to Athens on 15 September and return home on October 22. We will spend some days in Athens to let the luggage catch up; then rent a car to see the main part of the country and take boat trips as required to see the Islands. History, old buildings, beautiful vistas and sea side villages are part of what we hope to see. Are we spending about the right amount of time?
Questions;
what to see in Athens and how many days to spend in the city. Most books and websites say that 3 to 5 days is enough.
what to see out side Athens.
your favorite sites and why.

When I was in the Navy we stopped in Athens and Thessaloniki. Both are filled with historic sites. Obviously in Athens the Acropolis is a must see/visit.

If you get to the islands, then Santorini and Rhodes are musts.

"Crete" Minoan Civilization, great sights, beautiful mountains, wonderful people, fabulous food, Chania, a charming little port town.

Keep an eye on the Corona Virus situation. At the moment Greece is under strict lockdown. It might have improved by when you intend to travel, but it might not.

thanks on the Wuhan virus update. I thought that Greece was opening up but I just checked our CDC alert as and the CDC recommends no travel to Greece.

France is saying they're going to open this summer to American and other visitors who've been fully vaccinated, not sure what will be the status of Greece.

Too bad about the Covid alert in Greece as it is a wonderful country to visit. Every foreign country my wife and I consider touring this year we have been thwarted by Covid travel restrictions. We have decided to plan foreign travel for next year when hopefully everyone is happy and healthy. When you do visit Greece don’t disregard the northern areas of Thessaloniki and Meteora, just a short flight from Athens, very different from Athens and the islands which are very beautiful. We enjoyed every one of our five cruise and land tour visits. Good luck and safe travels.

Greece has not published any information on Wuhan virus tourism, but they are currently under no tourism for the Coronavirus.

We took a 5 day cruise which went to Rhodes, Crete, Santorini, Ephesus, and other areas. All interesting sites.

You could take short daily trips from Athens by ferry to the islands of Hydra and Mykonos.
I am sure you'll have a wonderful time.
Capturing light in the Greek islands is amazing.

We have two books on Greek island hopping. Could spend a lot of time doing such. Not sure how much luggage we want to haul. We may just take the backpacks w/o a laptop when island hoping.
Some travel books have suggested road trip info and I am finding info on the net. I know that there is a wealth of info at UHH. I will take the D850 and the f 2.8 24 to 70 and the 70 to 200. I have a nice iPhone to use as backup. I think the d500 will stay home; but it is small and fairly light so a back up might be nice.
