Just got a new TC-14E III and it rattles! There seems to be a little lever near the rim. I checked th documentation and there was no reference to the part or the rattle. Anyone know if that’s normal?
BTW it takes great pictures with the 500mm. F 5.6 PF.
Shouldn't be a problem. I have a teleconverter and extension tubes that rattle. I believe it comes from the tab/mechanism that couples the camera to the lens diaphragm.
Do a quick check to verify that is a version 3. Generations 1 & 2 had an aperture stop down lever for use with older lenses. That lever did make sounds when shaken. Version III did away with that lever arm and just uses electrical contacts for that purpose.

Are you saying that it rattles when mounted on the camera and the lens is installed? I would expect that it very well might rattle in that case. Until recently, lenses used a linkage to the mechanical aperture set arm that is part of the lens mount to set the correct f/stop in the lens when an exposure is made. "E" lenses (Electromagnetic Aperture) set the aperture electronically, not via this mechanical arm. It is therefore free to move around when the electronic aperture ("E") lenses are mounted. Many of the P lenses also have this system. So a "rattle" under some circumstances would not surprise me.
Thanks for the varied ideas. I’ll check them out!
Ron
I just double checked my version III. There is a mechanical linkage. It rattles until you mount it on the camera. It does not rattle when mounted. Tested on a D850
The only Nikon T/C I know of that doesn't have that rattle is the 1.25x.

Yep, I’m using it on a D850 too. Quiet when in use.

Rattling is not an issue with the TC-14E III. However, the only time I have found rattling a problem is when I am hiking out west and I hear a rattling near the ground, then, you may have a problem.

Good to know your TC-14E III works well with the Nikon 500 PF. I understand it would be shooting at f/8 but other than choosing sunny conditions are there any other restrictions you have found in it’s usage? I used to own a TC-14 II and found it worked well with a 70-200. BTW it also rattled. I use my 500 PF on a D500. Thanks for any information you may provide.
That little lever needs to be free moving, when it is installed between the camera and lens it links the aperture blades and no longer makes a noise. If, when it is not mounted on the camera/lens, it does not rattle you likely have problem.
Absolutely true. It rattles. Mine does the same thing. I bought mine used and thought "great I bought a broken one". Went to the camera store looked at a new one... rattle rattle. LOL
Thanks for all of the clarifications— makes me feel better!
Just wondering where you got your new TC 14Elll. I haven’t been able to find one.
