I have a terrible time cutting up onions. I read somewhere that putting a piece of bread in your mouth while working with the onions is the cure. It really sounds stupid, but it does help but it certainly doesn't solve the problem.

What causes the problem is onions are high in sulfur and some are higher in sulfur than the others. When cut they omit a sulfur gas that when it hits the liquid in your eyes causes sulfuric acid which irritates the eyes and causes you to tear up. The concentration of the sulfuric acid is not high enough to cause any damage but does cause irritation. Get a non storable onion that has less sulfur in it. The more sulfur they contain the more you will tear up. Get a less sulfur containing onion like Vidalia. The ground in Georgia contains little sulfur for the onions to absorb.

I find that if my wife cuts them, my eyes don’t water a bit!

I love to cook and do most of the cooking main meal and my wife does the veggies and or salad. Just my thing. I received a pair of those glasses as a gift and use them every time I peel and cut onions. They work great.

Best way to cut onions: Let someone else do it!

Second best way: We have a Jenn Air stove with a downdraft fan. Place a cutting board near the downdraft and it keeps the fumes from coming up to your eyes.

That's what Grandma told me! Cutting them under water works, too. My trick is to breathe totally through my mouth - no air through the nose = no irritating odors.

Here's my take on onions: Anything that once required a gas mask to handle is not food.

When I was a new guy in the Marines, I was on mess duty for a while. One day I was given a large bag of onions and told they needed to be peeled and sliced. I cried my way through about 2/3rds of the onions before my tear ducts dried up. I haven't shed an onion tear since then. I don't know what happened, but onions haven't bothered me a bit since then.

You became desensitized to them. That is how allergies are treated. They give you small amounts of the irritant until you become desensitized. You just received a crash course!
