Looking online, I found two ways to record video on my iMac.
1. Use Quicktime and select New Screen Recording. I did a test this morning, and I was able to record. When I tried to record a Zoom meeting just now, I clicked on New Screen..., but I got nothing to click to record.
2. Press Shift+Command+5. Nothing! Pressing it several times got me several beeps, so something was happening.
So, is it really possible to record on the Mac? On my Windows machine, it's a breeze, but I wasn't able to use that today.

I use an app that I downloaded called Capto and it works well each time I use it on my iMac. It's good for capturing screen and for recording (as an mp4 anything that's moving on your screen and the sound that goes with it. I always find using Quicktime for recording to be very iffy even if it does work at times.

Thanks, but that Command-Shift-5 does nothing but give me a beep.

Which operating system? I'm running Catalina on my old iMac and it works fine.

Thanks. I'll take a look.
EDIT: I looked at Apple, and they had it for $30. Then I went to Capo, and I bought it for $18.00. With half an hour left in the Zoom meaning, I'm paying $0.60/minute to record it.
I won't be at all sad when my Macs die.

I would be very unlikely to buy a PC... When I need Windows, I run it on a Mac in Parallels Desktop. Even the new M1 Macs can do that now.
https://youtu.be/pVfQ9e1PhAYMy son is testing that combination on the new M1 MacBook Air as I type this, and he's loving it. I just hope Microsoft formally licenses Windows for ARM to Mac users soon. Jay says it runs GREAT on the M1 using Parallels.
Movavi Screen Recorder 21 works very well and is not too costly.

Yes, that's excellent, and I have it on my Windows machine, but I didn't want to have to buy another copy for the Mac. What annoyed me was what often happens. I look up how to do something online, and the directions don't match what I have on the screen. Maybe the directions refer to a different version of the OS or the software, or maybe the guy who posted them is just messing with me. : )
Even using that $18 program, it didn't work right. I got picture but no sound, even though "Computer audio" was checked.
Someday, a technician is going to discover that electronics are smarter than we thought, and they just like to mess with us.

I tried to record a WebEx meeting (like Zoom), and Quicktime worked on my Mac but I also got no sound.
However, our meeting was set to NOT allow recording (I was trying to help the presenter, who couldn't get it to switch to recording—so that may have been my issue).
You do have to choose the right sound input, it's not "computer audio", for Zoom it's "Zoom Audio Device" .
To start recording, you choose New Screen Recording, select your audio device, click the red record button, then drag around the window you want to record or click to get full screen. After a few second, a button "Start Recording" appears in the window you dragged, click that to start. Click the little round black menulet icon in the very top Mac menu to stop.

Thanks. The Windows computer is so much easier to use.
Okay, you Mac people can start attacking now.
No attacks necessary. I’ve used both for 36 years. They’re different. Like cameras, each platform has benefits and drawbacks.
(Did you see the Apple Event yesterday? Their new iMac and iPad Pro are amazing. Both are powered by the M1 system on a chip.)
