Damariscotta, Newcastle (the Twin Villages), and the Damariscotta River, a twelve mile long tidal river with beautiful scenery. Take a boat trip if you can.

What suggestions do you have for places to photograph in Maine between Bar Harbor and Portland? Trip planned for July.
Thank you in advance!

Lighthouses, Rockland, Rockport, Those two on our list for the next trip, Boothbay Harbor and the gardens there, done them, considering Blue Hill for our next trip also, I'm going to like this thread, Bob.

Although about 40 miles south of Portland I would highly recommend the "Nubble" lighthouse in York. It is a beautiful lighthouse located on a nub of land (hence the nickname), and is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Maine. I would also recommend 2 lighthouses in Cape Elizabeth. One is Portland Head which is located in Fort Williams Park off Shore Road in Cape Elizabeth. The other is Twin Light also in Cape Elizabeth. You won't be disappointed. Welcome to Maine.

We lived in Boothbay for 17 years. Maine is most famous for its scenic rugged rocky coast. My all time favorite locations in order of gorgeousness are as follows IMHO:

1. Camden/Rockport/Owls Head. Camden is the most picturesque village with much to see as harbor, mount Beaty, etc. Adjacent Rockport is small and quaint with a picturesque steep hillside narrow harbor full of boats. The nearby Owl's Head lighthouse off Rockport is very nice and accessible. Lot to see and do in this area.

2. Boothbay Harbor. This is the epitome of beautiful harbor full of lobster boats and a rugged rocky coastline. Take Route 96 to the end at ocean point, park in the small parking lot and turn left to walk the rocky coast for nearly a mile. You need to be in reasonably good physical condition for this awesome view and experience. It requires lots of ups and downs to make your way along the coast. It was my favorite thing to do for exercise for 17 years. Then take the loop road along the peninsula tip back to town. Next you should take Route 27 loop road on Southport Island for more great scenic views.

While here in the area you should go to the Pemaqid Point Lighthouse accessible from the village of Damariscotta. It's my personal favorite of all the lighthouses in Maine. It sits atop a beautiful rocky outcrop.

3. Bar Harbor. Natural scenic beauty abounds here. Acadia Nat'l Park is beautiful, but I was never impressed much with Cadillac Mountain. This park actually consists of several separate areas. One of the better parts is on the Schoodic Peninsula farther up the coast near Winter harbor. More beautiful rocky coast here.

4. Portland Head Lighthouse. No visitor to Maine should pass up this one. It's used for artwork on all of the calendars.

This does not mean there aren't many other beautiful places in Maine -- there absolutely are. Most of the best is along the coastline of Fjord like fingers. Places like Ogunquit, York Beach, and Kennebunkport farther south come to mind also. Maine is a beautiful state for many reasons like beautiful lakes and inland rivers as well.

In this day and age everyone uses online maps to travel, but I think I still would want paper maps to travel Maine. My ever present companion was always DeLorme's Maine Atlas set of 70 exploded grid maps. You should not leave home without one. I'm sure it's still available on line.

I don't know how much time you have booked for your Maine vacation, but I must warn you that travel in Maine is slow and time consuming. If you travel the interstates you will see nothing. All the good stuff is off small two lane roads full of small towns and slow speed limits.

We highly recommend The Thistle Inn in Camden. Ask for the room overlooking the Penobscot bay. Camden Hills State Park is a 5,710-acre public recreation area overlooking Penobscot Bay in the town of Camden, Knox County, Maine. The state park features multi-use trails to Mount Battie, Mount Megunticook, and other scenic locales. (Thanks Wikipedia). Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbor is a must see. Also in Bar Harbor if time allows, take the high speed boat out to see the whales. Tell Spoon and Sword I said hello. Donโ€™t forget that there are no traditional hotels on the coast. Itโ€™s all B &Bโ€™s. Book early and take a big checkbook with you.

Around Camden, don't miss a trip to Camden Hills State park for great view of the islands. A similar and arguably even better view can be had at Lookout Point in Northport.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic there have been changes in the park accommodations, facilities and bus service.

Consider the Acadia hotel in Bar Harbor. It's right across the street from the Town green you can catch the busses into the park, and not have to worry about driving and parking in the park, often an issue in the summer. It's an easy walk to all the downtown stuff and the waterfront, and there's a great breakfast place right next door.

We stayed last summer in Port Clyde which really was a village and beautiful. Rockland was ideal and a good base and less congested than Camden or Rockport.

I don't like to tell people what they should do since everyone's tastes differ but I truly enjoyed a day trip to Monhegan Island reached by a passenger ferry. I would return since it was such a visual feast.
