Thank You All for your responses.
Wow! So many kind, generous and very helpful people.
I am thankful for all of your comments and suggestions.
You've all helped me feel good about my situation
and the prospects for a successful and happy outcome
from my cataract surgery. I am especially appreciative
that you stayed specifically with answering my questions.
I'm really looking forward to my surgery now.
Thank you all.
Sincerely,
Larry H.

I had cataract surgery and presently use a mirrorless and a DSLR camera (Sony RX10 iii & Canon 5D Mark iii). I can easily read numbers/symbols in both cameras. My cataract lens are for distance. Some folk with distance/close and others have close. I personally prefer distance and wear glasses for close up like reading, but do not wear glasses when photographing. I use manual and auto-focus depending upon the situation. Any pictures that I have posted in the last two years have been taken post-cataract surgery.
In summary, I don't believe you will have problems with numbers/symbols nor focusing.
I agree with the previous post that you can adjust your view on the camera to match your eye sight!

What Nitroclimber said. My experience exactly.
Would like to echo what ldhflyguy said.
What wonderful responses from so many thoughtful and caring people.
It is fabulous to see such an endearing outpouring of support here on UHH this morning.
Like ldhflyguy I'm apprehensive about the impact this procedure will have not only on photographic endeavors but also my ability to maintain my same lifestyle...
Thank you ldhflyguy for bring this to the fore...
It is so appropriate and germane to so many on this site...
Again many thanks to all you wonderful folks here...
Great synergy latent within this compelling post/thread!
After my double cataract surgery, the first thing I noticed was that the yellowish cast had disappeared from my eyesight, and I had gained about 1 1/2 stops of brightness.. My distance vision is now 20-20, but I do need mild (2-2.5) readers for my camera information and my car's dashboard, computers, etc. I think you will be pleased!
I'm reporting back: Yesterday I had my second cataract surgery....the one to correct my other eye. I had my first surgery 2 weeks ago. I'm happy to report that my vision is very good in both eyes. I am super happy with the results. I still have about 27 days of drops to go in my second surgery eye. In about 6 weeks I am scheduled to go in for an eye exam to get corrective lenses (bifocals). I expect very little correction for distance viewing and the necessary correction for my bottom/bifocal lenses for reading. I'm going to get separate glasses for my computer 27" monitor usage. For most of my life I've been wearing glasses for distance viewing. Those glasses were bifocals so I could also see close up.
I am most happy to report that I can use my DSLR viewfinder with no problems, including reading the small letters/numbers at the bottom of the viewfinder.
I hope this post helps to assure anyone that has my previous doubts that, you will probably be able to use your camera viewfinder just fine after your cataract surgery.
Thank You to All Who assured me that my camera viewfinder usage would be fine.
So glad it worked out well for you!
