Good Grief, I see all the opinions on UHH, but must say that perhaps you need an easy to carry around bridge camera, with a good zoom.

Instead of taking that camera bag with various lenses and stuff, why not try one of the, "Bridge Cameras" that have great zoom, megapixels, and great control? They may not make that, "excellent" photo that you want, but most of them will provide excellent shots of everything enlargecd up to 16 X 20', withoout much pixellation or distortion.

I just recently upgraded to a Nikon P-510 and love what it can do. I am amazed at the zoom and quality of the pics! Well, I decided, I did not want to have something hanging from my neck, even with the P-510!

Oh well, I finally decided to order from Amazon the Panasonic Lumix SZ7, that will do all I want and more! It cost $115 on Amazon and I got it in two days.

Oh well, make everything simpler . . . .

Gary, I started with a Nikon point and shoot, and I found there was a lot of photos I simply couldn't get with it. You can't take a picture of a running stream, river, or waterfall, and have that serene smoke like effect with a P&S camera, you can't freeze a humming bird's wings in mid air and get every detail in the wings, with tack sharp pictures, you can't get 3-d like photos that really pop the same way as with a DSLR. If you are someone who wants to shoot pictures of your dog or cat, and grandkids or other relatives at holidays, then a P&S is for you. I have an entry level D3100 Nikon with a kit lense, and a 55-300mm zoom lense, and I am finding myself limited, as I would love to be able to get better action shots of wildlife, panoramas, and landscapes. True those lenses will do all those things, but they are limited, and I still have plenty to learn about serious photography before I need to worry about more gear.

Why have 3 bodies with completely different controls???

Why not? I have the d90 and 3100. I'm planing on acquiring the d5100. Just waiting to see if there will be a d5200 because I purchased the d3100 three months unknown (before) the d3200 came out.

Anyway, I'm retired. All my children are adults with their immediate families and all are doing well. So to spend my money my choice is to either frequent bars, chase women and have nothing to show for my expense or spend my money on photography, travelling and volunteering which gives me pleasure and something to show for my time and expense.

Your opinion on how I or anyone else spends money and a dollar will buy me a cup of coffee. 8-)

AND I choose to no longer have a wife to drive me further into unnecessary debt.

"Why have 3 bodies with completely different controls?"

Each body is unique for different photographic situations. Having different controls challenges my mind. Keeping my mind active reduces the possibility of Alzheimer.

So I'll buy as many cameras bodies as I want. It's my money and is not to be questioned.

The original question was choosing between the d3100 vs the d5100 not "why a third body."

In answer to the original question, d3100 vs d5100? I recommend the d5100. Even with the higher mpx's of the d3200, I still recommend the d5100.

With hind sight, knowing what I know now, I would have purchased the d5100 with two kit lens, then the d90 with two kit lens, then the d3200 body, then the Coolpix p510, and then some prime lens like the 85mm, the 50mm, the 105mm and the 24mm. See I have lots of equipment to buy. :-P :-P[/quote]

And you have a blast spending your money! Sounds like so much fun.

Gear hound, I am! I love the gadgets and new cameras. But it does get a little spendy.

I'm with you pug! I haven't had my D3100 + 18-55mm kit lens 3 months, and I've already added the 55-300mm, 35mm prime, and a 50mm prime. I'm seriously considering the 5100, but I'm waiting to see what the 5200 is going to be like when it comes out. And you're right Perry, it is spendy. My son thinks I'm nuts, but like Pug, I don't have a wife to spend it for me and the bills are paid. :)

Thank you for your support, X. I guess like me & Perry, you like all the gadgets and gear too. I do have a husband, but he likes the stuff too. So we have a collection of cameras....probably need to try and sell a couple.
