This is a waste of time. Nikon or Canon? Mirrored or Mirrorless. Chevy or Ford. All good things and machines.
Their seems to be a war conceptually here over 2 wonderful kinds of camera's. The machines called camera's generally work beautifully. And are amazing that a device so small and can do so much. Kudo's to the manufacturers and designers of these camera's. And my question is how Fuji or Nikon don't dont build many camera's anymore and China, Thailand etc can do a great job for Nikon and Fuji etc. From what I read we can't make the smart phones here. No supply chain, labor qualified and a sense of pride.
I am not as smart and some here are really knowledgeable.
Here is my quote out of google and the reason I like mirrorless
"The preview on the screen of a mirrorless camera will look close to the final image."
EVF's are doing a great job. Where are we in this. Why is everything we pick up from Asia.
We are a great country and great people? Spend to much time arguing with ourselves.
Stay safe. Keep shooting

I just don't think there will be much advancements/development in DSLR. There is no advantage, early on their was a focus speed advantage, but that has been eliminated. There is no reason to continue to make a more complicated camera that uses more parts when there is no advantage. Mirrorless have the advantage of being able to not only use their brand lenses but you can also use every DSLR lens ever made from every manufacture in history. You can set the view finder to give you the view of a DSLR or the even better view of what the actual picture you are taking is going to look like before you take it.

Mirrorless is a way of life, seeing the world through new lenses and knowing that light reaches a sensor having never been reflected.

It doesn't matter the particular issue...folks will always break down into their own camps.

At this juncture...the DSLR folks break down into the following cats.
1.) Given my age, my DSLR is good enough for me and will serve me to the end ... a normal position and response.
2.) I am saving up for a mirrorless...maybe the next generation... a normal position and response.
3.) DSLR's are just as good as mirrorless, it's all hype ... this is the 'head in the sand' response.

Curved sensors are coming ... allowing for greater image quality and simpler lens designs (which is really cool).
They aren't going into any DSLR's. So the third category will have to dig their heads in even deeper...or switch to a more normal category.

I will have to go with you, Wallen.
The image is my goal, whether it is taken with an f 0.45 super lens or a pinhole camera.

Catholics, Buddhists, Islamists - or Atheists?

The universe works in crazy ways. You can have good luck wash over you in waves, just like bad luck. Or, you can change to a mirrorless camera.

And now, Sigma has a P&S full frame 61 MP for only $2495. Where do we go next?

The chief advantage of a DSLR is they make you stronger. The advantage of a mirrorless is that it’s lighter.

The next scam will be "silent cameras." Everyone will have to "go silent!"

When I put my D500 into Live View mode, don't I have a pseudo "mirrorless camera" now? The screen that shows what is coming through the lens is on the back of the camera instead of the viewfinder. And further more I have a histogram operating in real time so I can make adjustments before the shot is taken. I can also critically focus, expose and frame the shot as needed. Why buy some new gear to keep trendy when I've got it all - 3 in 1 - DSLR, Mirrorless and Video. This will satisfy my needs for years to come.
When I put my D500 into Live View mode, don't I ha... (show quote)

Not quite. You just disabled your PDAF auto focus system. So if you still want the camera to auto focus you've got trouble. You do benefit from additional exposure aids. However your lens mount is still in the same place. Using a mirrorless camera I have access to some better lenses than you do. They take better photos and are only available for mirrorless cameras. You can't get them for a DSLR at any cost because the mirror is in the way.

It's fine that you're DSLR does what you need. You shouldn't buy new gear to keep trendy. I have new mirrorless cameras and trendy had nothing to do with my purchase decisions. I bought them because my needs are different than yours.

Well thought out! You are spot on about mirrorless cameras being video cameras in disguise. I owned a film and video production company for 20 plus years and the new (old) technology hyped in the mirrorless camera is what we saw in 1980 ENG gear. I just test drove the Nikon Z7ii and even though it has some nice features it is not, in my opinion ready for prime time. If you are just starting your photographic adventure I mirrorless might be the way to go, but replace your DSLR why?

Thanks again for your well articulated thoughts.
