I was playing with the Nikon P1000 on my deck in Central Alberta when I saw the contrails of a large plane passing just to the south of me. At the time I shot the image (at 3000mm, handheld) I had no idea what it was.

I later tracked it down as being an Atlas Air DreamLifter on a seven hour flight from from Anchorage, AK to Charleston, SC.:
GTI4531/N780BA filed a flight plan ANC -> CHS
Atlas Air #4531/N780BA (BLCF) has just filed a flight plan.
It is scheduled to depart from Anchorage Intl (ANC) at 10:40AM AKDT Tuesday (23 Mar) heading for Charleston Intl/AFB (CHS) for an estimated arrival at 09:36PM EDT Tuesday (23 Mar).

It isn't the best image but I'm still rather amazed I could actually make out the plane at an altitude of 10,680 m (35,039 ft.) almost directly into the sun.

I hadn't even realized a DreamLifter existed prior to yesterday. A real monster of a plane and I understand the only plane capable of ferrying assemblies for Boeing's DreamLiner aircraft.

Enjoy!

A converted B747-400, that carries about four times the payload of the original. About half a dozen of themnaround, maybe less. NICE work!

Great shot!! That plane carries wing and fuselage components for assembly in assembly plant in CHS. It lands on the Air Force side which has the longest runways a bit over 2 miles.

That’s a rather remarkable image considering you shot it handheld at 3000mm eq.! Not bad at all, and the P1000 brought it right in.

That is a neat shot. That must have been difficult to get at a 3000mm fl.

I used the framing button the side of the lens to get the plane centered then let the camera zoom back to 3000mm. I shot five images. This one was about the best for focus. The last one was the plane through trees...

I read an article on the plane's development. Interesting approach to a heavy hauler.

I saw somewhere that the plane requires about 9,500' for runway for a safe takeoff...

I wouldn't call the picture even close to an award winner BUT it was good enough to identify the type of plane.

As for 'bringing it right in', the P1000 does an excellent job; however, atmospherics get in the way on those long shots as shown below. But I could make out a few wild horses in the clearing.

Enjoy!
