Similar experience with a Home Depot review on a mail order item.

The quality of the delivered items was extremely poor and a significant portion of the lumber was severely warped, and my critical one-start review was rejected as it didn't "meet the standards set by Home Depot".

Be careful, yes. Reject cometely, no.

I buy and sell quite a bit of stuff on eBay and have done for a while, without issue.

Not as a business, just as a private seller, offloading things I no longer want, or buying stuff I do want. But yes, be VERY careful.

Having said that, it's amazing what sort of stupid prices people will bid for stuff. The red mist of competition serves sellers well, but eBay increasing intrusive demands are troublesome.

Why should they care, they’re in only for the money and every minute there’s a sucer born

What other reason would Amazon be in business for other than to make money?

There are still reviews, positive and negative, that seem plenty real.
Then there are the joke reviews, which are hilarious.
And the scathing negative reviews from people who are basically idiots. "It broke when I did this" (when they shouldn't have done that). Or "this is cheaply built!" (when they bought the bargain-priced item).

We all know that you cannot trust the customer reviews on Amazon. I saw a video on YouTube about them last night, and it's worse than I thought. There are businesses built around manipulating reviews and Amazon sellers.

Without going into all the details, it's relatively easy for these companies to ruin a good company and boost an inferior one. Amazon gets millions of complaints about phony reviews, but they don't seem to do much about them - largely because of the scale of the abuse.

As I've said before, I do a lot of online research before I buy anything. I look for reviews, tests, and comparisons. I won't be bothering with Amazon reviews any longer.

It's not unique to Amazon reviews! It's a serious problem with all reviews as unscrupulous people manipulate them for payments. And it's people like you who rely on reviews in order to decide whether to buy or not that causes such bad behavior.

I left Amazon over a year ago. Haven’t missed it.

I just made that decision this morning. I think Amazon.com was a good thing once upon a time, but it has gotten too big to manage, in my opinion.

I had the same experience and gave the same response. There's no need to read lots of reviws, just scan 3-4 worst reviews for specifics to get enough info to make a decision

I only consider reviews of products reliable if they have at least 1000 reviews.
Not much Amazon can do about it.
They would have to set up a very large investigative branch.
Take them with a grain of salt and always cross-compare with other sites.

Next time when you are checking ratings or reviews, go to https://reviewmeta.com/ and paste the URL of the product from the Amazon website. This site analyzes reviews, eliminates fake or unreliable reviews and provides you with an adjusted, real global rating for the product.
One more thing to keep in mind when you read reviews of the product. Sometimes the majority of reviews are for a different product! This is outrageous but true.

I rarely purchase anything from Amazon especially anything for photography. Amazon has gotten way too big in my opinion. As for reviews in general, a short time ago Forbes published a list of the top 500 large companies to work for in 2021, by large they mean 1,000 or more employees. I happen to work for one of the companies listed in the top 25 and I want to know exactly who got surveyed for Forbes because that is not how I know the company from the inside looking out. Who got paid and how much to "stuff the ballot box" as they say; certainly no one that I know of. Totally bogus!!!

I'll somewhat consider Amazon (and other) reviews but I mostly only look at the 3-star comments. I figure the 4- and 5-star comments are likely planted by phony reviewers and the 1- and 2-star reviews are generally the few people who have a grudge ...

So should we ignore all the glowing 5-star reviews of B&H and Adorama; and the scathing 1-star reviews of FedEx, UPS, and USPS that we see on UHH?!!!

I have actually made several reviews for items I’ve purchased on Amazon. I cannot vouch for others, but the reviews I have made have been printed exactly as I created them. Good or bad. At least accurately.

I buy many things through Amazon. There are many reasons for my purchases and I love Amazon. They are not perfect but in my world they are quite satisfactory. I agree with alexol on his reasoning and judgement. YOU are responsible for what you buy and I believe Amazon usually gives enough information for me to make an informed decision.

I am suspicious of some eBay sellers` positive reviews that number well over 100,000.

Suspicion is good. Of course, for many people, selling on Bay is how they make their living, so lots of sales would be expected.
