Downhill Ski Racing

I was invited to shoot some downhill ski races this weekend
at the Devil's Head Ski Resort just north of Madison, WI.
The ages ranged from 7 to college age. It was a great
experience and I got some fun shots. I highly recommend!
Mostly shot as jpegs with the D500 and the Tamron 150-600mm
G2 lens, although I mixed in some D750 shots with the 70-200
for closer action. I tried f13 and 1/4000th to deal with the
snow and sun - auto iso landed in the 200-400 range. I purposely
shot a bit underexposed then did light adjustments in Lightroom.

Very nice work here skylark. At my age I better wait until the schools open. Just turned 75.
Be safe young man.

Considering the snowy background, I would have thought exp choice would have been more on the plus side. These are really good!!

Epic pivotal moments 67skylark27… superb timing and stellar composition… so beautifully captured!
Loving the chic vivid wardrobe styling… Those who frequent the ski slopes are certainly into fashion forward… btw those full helmets are serious pieces of kit for downhill… literally a must have since recreational downhill skiers often average speeds up to 40 mph.

Btw downhill racers clock out at up to 60 mph and Olympians tend to ski between 75 and 95 mph! Life in the fast lane… what an adrenaline rush!

Wise move to shoot at 1/4000 and f/13… motion blur (even with panning) is omnipresent with this genre… and f/13 allows the entire skier to be in focus. In this scenario your D750 has maxed out since it’s crippled with a 1/4000 SS… and the primary reason I sold my D610… The D610 was sadly an epic fail for shooting hummingbirds… Experience is a brutal teacher. Might stay with the D500 for downhill, it is designed for both very quick focusing and high shutter speed. You can always push ISO in post, but fixing motion blur is at best a nightmare…

Thank you for sharing this breathtaking lifestyle sport 67skylark27… it is decidedly the domain of the more affluent client… Please consider taking your business cards on your next outing. You might just make airfare to the Swiss Alps… lol

Please consider attaching high resolution files for download, I would cherish an opportunity to study your photo-artistry in all its vivid detail! These are some of the best action captures I’ve seen posted on this forum… All the best on your fabulous journey 67skylark27
