Cool day-48 F, steady 20+ MPH wind from the South-Soutwest. Bright overcast. Birds were all very quiet.
While glassing the hz I noted this crow walking by looking at me.
After taking some crow shots I moved to another location out of the terrible wind. I saw some small birds scurrying around in the underbrush and just out of the thicket onto the grass.
Both the White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows were in a loose flock feeding. They flit between the thicket and the grass. I sat for about 20 minutes before the little guys started coming out.
Minimal cropping-mostly compositional crops as the birds were really close to me-sometimes inside of the minimum focusing distance of 10 feet!
D500, 500pF except for #3, #4, and #10. Those images were taken with my new 300pF attached to my D850! The 300pF seems to need good light and a shutter speed above 320! Takes great images though! The 300pF on my D850 sans battery grip is a very light weight combo suitable as a walk around set!

Thanx for viewing! Very slow day with the high wind then these little guys showed themselves!
Nice photos, including my favorite being the strutting crow. Thanks for your tutorial format with the details

Thanx for viewing. Crows are interesting and fun to watch and photograph. As can be seen they have an iridescence to their feathers. I exposed to bring out the feather detail with colors.

You are welcome! All I had-both cameras- were some crow shots! Then I noticed the little guys. Note the subtle shadings-breeding season.
Real nice set, GC Sparrows should start coming into breeding colors soon. I agree, the strutting Crow is a winner. I think No. 3 is a song sparrow.
An excellent set, Tim. Sharp and well-composed.
Another beautiful set, Tim!
All nicely done, but the last crow is definitely "Putting on the Ritz". Thanks for sharing.

Could be a Song Sparrow but I believe it is a female Golden-crowned. Fortuitous captures! Thanx for viewing!
