The R5 has some serious advantages such as the 100-500 mm lens, 800 mm lens, in body stabilization (IBIS), fast and accurate focus, as well as eye focus, and image size. However, the R5 has a different layout and form factor that will require some adjustment in the way you shoot. If you have doubts, rent one and try it.

I have the 5DSR, 5D4, and R5.

The R5 has some quirks you have to get used to, many of which are available settings, but in everything that matters for giving you the tools to capture high quality images under a wide variety of conditions (resolution, sharpness, low light focusing and noise, image stabilization, autofocus on faces/eyes, ISO range, dynamic range, strobe shutter speed, HDR, FPS) it is occasionally equal to and usually better than both DSLRs combined. My only gripes: no GPS (5D4 has this feature) and the battery drain is high. Getting the grip solves the latter but be aware that the more expensive of the two available grips only uses one battery for the camera!!!

I bought the 5D Mk IV when it was released in 2015 and loved using it. 5 years on I made the leap and traded it for the R5 in Nov 2020. In my opinion the R5 is a far superior camera and I have no regrets making the change. The AF, resolution and EVF (which I like) and the eye tracking really makes it much easier to get well focused and sharp photos. I think its a no brainer buying the R5. I bought the adapter to use my EF lens. The only downside is the very expensive RF lens. Eventually I will sell my EF lens and migrate to RF lens, perhaps the 28-70, 70-200 for a start. Hope this helps!

You can read Jeff Cable’s blog to get his impressions of the R5 vs the high end Canon DSLR bodies...

I struggled with the same question. I have an 8 year old 5D3 that has been a workhorse. I think the 5D4 is a better version of that.
I bought a R5 a few months ago. It's a great camera - photos are super sharp, lots of pixels, and the AF is head and shoulders better than the 5D3 - and probably the 5D4. It's a little smaller and lighter which is nice. I notice a big image quality improvement. I've kept my 5D3 as a backup camera - but I'll probably never using it again.
I feel that I made the right choice. I bought the R5 with the 24-105 f4. Much better than the 24-105 on the 5D3. I bought an adapter to use with my other lenses - 70-200 and 100-400.

With me the question is MONEY. The question is NOT should I buy it.

My experience also. And in those cases the RF lenses are a step above the L series. As a small sidebar where you may not care, almost all the R&D money for both bodies and lenses are going into the mirrorless family. I'd suggest you stay in front with the R5. Use the EF lenses with an adapter and as you move forward get the RFs. And it sounds like Canon is about to release many more RF lenses.

Canon's pending 1-series mirrorless body and a whole new generation of Great White red-ringed RF primes are intended to take all three medals on every podium at the 2021 Toyoko Olympics.

I know this is something that has been asked a thousand times before. Sorry if I'm repeating the topic. I'm currently shooting with a Cannon 7D. Great camera no complaints. I'm wanting to move into a full frame format. I'm looking at either the EOS R5 mirrorless or the 5D mark IV. I value the advice I 've always received from UHH. So please give me your opinion.

I currently have a Canon EOS RP and a 5DIV. I bought the Canon RP to put my toes into the mirrorless camera world.
I bought the RP and I love it. I think that the eye focus is GREAT! It will even focus/track the eye of a human character on a TV screen.
I also have the Canon RP 24-105mm F4L IS (Image Stabilization) that had never come off of the RP body.
The RP body does not have "In-Body Image Stabilization" (IBIS).
I am such a fan of the RP that I want to "move-up" to the EOS R5 body with eye focus and IBIS, with an RF 28-70mm F2L lens.

Since I don't need three cameras the only question that I will have is do I keep the Canon EOS RP with the Canon RP 24-105mm F4L IS or the
Canon EOS 5DIV with a Canon ES 24-70F2.8L.

I know that as soon as I pull the trigger Canon will announce a new camera body, sigh. . . .
Best wishes on your decision and

About 4months ago I moved from the Canon 5DSR and a 77D to the R5 with the basic adapter. I bought the 800 mm, have a Sigma 150-600 C that works so fast and sharp I'm going to sell the very excellent 800. I shoot birds every day along with landscapes. I'm a zoomer, have been for 60 years and like the range options unavailable with fixed aperture. I'm now 80, wonderfully blessed, feel and act 40, gear weight is not an issue. I'm keeping the 5DSR, and the 77D wonderful cameras, for occasional use and backup, and a great original Canon 100-400, now old, and a 24-105 II. The focus features (along with the manual split image device and the custom settings) of the R5 are totally worth the upgrade. Get the R5. Yes, I am dreaming of a Sigma 60-160 to replace my current Sigma, but may wait to see if one for the R will be offered before too long.

Jimmy, have you been out in the early morning air, sniffing those high octane fumes drifting down from the hill country? It's RF 24-105mm, not RP 24-105mm!

I think you’ll find going mirrorless is freeing. I switched about 3 years ago and have never looked back.

It depends on your objectives, current and future. If they include wildlife or sports, then the R5 is the way to go. Otherwise the 5Dmk4 is a wonderful camera that will provide awesome results.

The ISO performance, frame rate, pixel density and eye focusing are game changers for BIF for me. I have shot with both. The speed and accuracy of the autofocus is significantly better with the R5. The frame rate is double or triple that of the 5D Mark iv. I love the R5 and am glad to have made the trade...for so many reasons
