Tethering Sony Camera to phone

I have a Sony a7riii camera and often use the Imaging Edge Mobile app on my Android phone to remotely view and shoot pictures. I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, Model SM-G955U.
This app will only connect with the camera via Wi-Fi so I can only use it indoors. My question and issue is this...I often shoot landscape photos close to the ground to get the perspective I like. Due to my age, I find it difficult to get on the ground to take these pictures. By the way, the problem is not getting on the ground, it's getting up. Ha, Ha. Is there any device that will allow me to stream the image to my phone or other device outdoors and shoot the picture without having to get on the ground. I prefer not to use a right angle finder if there is even one for this camera.
Thank you.
Jerry

Would a small, cell phone sized, html screen work for you?

sure, as long as it would work outdoors, away from Wi-fi signal.
thanks.

If you have no Wi fi built into your camera, Tether Tools has a device that will create the Wi fi network & let you do what you want

While I want to recommend the CaseAir wireless tether, it doesn’t seem compatible with your Sony. You might check CamRanger.

Even when near Wi-Fi, you would just select the device as your preferred network. I’ve taken to setting up the camera on a tripod, setting the frame, and using the remote release to capture the picture I see on my phone.

Very handy for the great blue heron nests and my heavy lens.

I think that your Sony will connect using wi-fi. Switch on wi-fi options on the camera, go to your wi-fi settings in the Samsung and look for the camera SSID and connect to that. This link is for the A7c guide, but it is almost the same as the Ar7 III.

You just don’t understand how the WIFi connection works. Your home WiFi has nothing to do with it. You camera has its own WiFi that you phone connects to. You just go into the phone settings and select the camera’s WiFi as your channel. It should work anywhere.

I believe from your comments that you are under the assumption that the camera/phone combination uses an inhouse wifi to make the connection. I'm not sure this is true. I think the camera and phone can set up a point-to-point wifi link between the camera and the phone. Since it is a point-to-point link it can be used anywhere as long as the distance between the two devices is not beyond the signal range.

I was interested, so took a look at dpreview for this camera, and it appears to be a high functioning Wi-Fi, with controls and image review, readily set up on an Android phone...iOS not quite as easy.

I’ll suggest reading the manual and play around with it. I think you’ll be pleased...or at least hope so.

Even better, no additional hardware. Turn on camera Wi-Fi, open the settings on the phone to find the network, and play. Yes, there might be an app required, but guessing it’s free. Guessing there will be a password required, so hunt for where to find that.

Most importantly, write back about your success.

You can use the Imaging Edge Mobile app with the Sony A7r III anywhere. The camera is the WiFi hot point.

Hi,
I do have wi-fi built into the camera but when I shoot outdoors, there is no wi-fi signal available.
I am looking at your link to tethering tools.
It looks like it might work.
Thank you so much.

Wow, I will try that today.
I remember seeing something like the wi-fi information in the camera that is different from my router wi-fi info.
I can't wait to try this.
Thank you.

Hi All,
You are all right regarding the built in wi-fi signal outdoors.
Thank you all so much.
Nothing like getting what you want and not having to pay for extra equipment!

I think the point here is that the internal camera Wi-Fi is its own hotspot/source, independent of your home Wi-Fi.

If you open your list of available Wi-Fi networks, the camera is one that should available (1. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on in the camera, if there is a menu option for that and 2. Make sure the camera is turned).

Next, find the Sony app that works with the camera in the app store. Install it. Actually you should do this first, but you can also look for the network first...doesn’t really matter.

From what I can tell, you won’t need an external device.

You have to turn the WiFi on the camera on then find it in the WiFi list on your phone and connect to it.
