I am old fashioned, I have magnifying glasses and two "pocket microscopes" (folding pocket sized multi-lens magnifiers) I have owned since I took Geology 101 for 2 semesters (lab and field) back in the early 60's. And I still have the geologist's hammer with belt holster and the Buck General knife and sheath I got for our trips into the field, caves, open pits etc. The guy who was the professor had been a field geologist for Chevron for 20 years all over the world and believed in being prepared. The only thing he didn't have us pack was a gun since the college got antsy about students tramping around Western Kentucky and Tennessee armed. We were almost all small town and farm kids and the idea of tramping around unarmed was strange to us.

Robert; I totally understand your using pocket microscopes as I have 4 Hasting Triplets I keep in my shaving kit. 1 at 7X, 1 at 10x, 1 at 14X and the last one which I only use for small slivers at 20X.
IMHO, the magnifier App on my smart phone is absolutely the best for reading small print!
I'll never use the Triplets for reading anything! They were mostly used for failure analysis on mechanical fractures.

90% of my reading these days is e-books, just use the magnify tool or change the font size.
Now pill bottles etc. the simpler of my pocket microscopes has two 1" lenses that move separately 1 is 2x, 1 is 5x and together they are 10x.

I forgot, the one thing I use the camera in the smart phone for on a regular basis - model & serial # plates. I snap a picture of it and then fill out the service request etc. Saves running back and forth or taking written notes.

I got single focus. Advised by ophthalmologist. My vision is the best now of my life. I have to wear reading glasses. Photography improved.

I am scheduled for cataract surgery in May and would welcome anyone's experience with the surgery and the affect on your photography. I am also interested in whether you chose multi-focal lenses or the single focus lenses. I am leaning toward the former. I searched past posts on this subject, but most of them were at least 4 years old. The availability of multi-focal lenses has certainly improved since then, so I thought I would seek more current experiences.

I got the multi focal lens. They are a "Fresnel" lens with multiple rings which fopcus at different distances. At first was not too happy as every light source had a halo ring. Not so much noticeable during the day but at night was very distracting as every vehicle rear light and all street lights and traffic lights had huge bright halo rings.

Now that I have had them for a couple of years, the halos no longer seem noticeable and I am very happy with the results. Cataract surgery will make everything appear so much brighter so suggest you get a good quality pair of Sunglasses. My wife had cataract surgery too but she went with one eye for distance and one for closeup reading. She too is quite satisfied

Same here. Before I was nearsighted and after surgery far-sighted. I had to change some diopter settings as a result.

That was my case as well. Before the surgery I was extremely near sighted focusing to less than 6" in one eye.
I'd needed glasses everyday since half way through primary school. Now my eyes focus to infinity unaided.
I do need reading glasses to focus on nearer objects & struggle to read without them.

The change has made my photography easier.

I chose the single focus lenses. The doc put in one for a bit farther away in my right eye and the left eye got the lens for slightly closer. I still wear reading glasses for actual reading and computer. I spoke to several people who spent the considerable fees (+$2000 per eye) and they ended up needing glasses after 3-5 years.

To tell you how my photography experience improved: WOWWIE. I could see again. Easiest surgery I've ever had and the best IMMEDIATE result!

You might ask if you will get the same distance correction with a multi-focal lens. This might affect your photography. My wife had one eye done for distance and one for close up. As a result she does not need to use reading glasses. However, she doesn't think her distance vision is as good as mine. I had both done for distance, but do have to use glasses for reading and the computer. It's a tradeoff. The multi-focal lenses would certainly be convenient, but make sure that you'll be happy with them.

Hi, I had both eyes done for cataract removal and removal with replacement lens was done by a laser system vs. done by hand. This was the option I was given and informed the laser is always very accurate! So not really an option))
My vision improved which helped my focusing and vision in general.
Doesn’t seem to have any negative effect on taking photo’s.
Good luck, not painful at all. Needed various eye drops afterwards!
