It is AI based. If the subject matter is in its database, it will result in minimal image degradation. If it isn't the degradation can be pretty bad, especially in the out of focus foreground areas.

Very interesting. My attempts on my Sony A6500 must have all been with subjects not in its database, as the results have had a lot of degradation. I almost never use it for that reason.

My results were similar using the A6500.

I have not tried it on a full frame Sony. Maybe that is a different experience.

Yes, IMO, because of the generally speaking larger pixels of FF, is capable of a higher scene fidelity which leads to and allows the CIZ to render a perception of higher scene fidelity also. Using lower ISO's on any format also helps in this regard. Full frame is also where most people are focal length/magnification challenged !

Obviously it is not as good as a GOOD longer lens - BUT, can you afford $$$$ the longer lens and are you willing to manage/carry it ? Many, many of us can not and are not !

It is better than using optical extenders AND, it is fast and FREE.

Thanks for everyone’s comments! After reading I will only use CIZ on my little Sony RX100Mvii.

I don’t agree! I Don’t see Any Image degradation at all! Are you a pixel peeper? I know of no other camera Manufacturer offers something like this. Provide examples of their software and comparing to Sony.

I was comparing it to sraight digital zoom which has been in cameras for many years. You've made my point by saying you don't see any degradation without pixel peeping or any magnification.

I also like to use CIZ on my Sony cameras, my A6300 and my RX100M7 and I love the feature. There is little to no loss of image quality, but yes, you have to shoot in JPEG. But to answer the OP’s question, at least one manufacturer, Panasonic has a similar feature called “Intelligent Zoom.” At least this is found on their compact cameras, such as the ZS series—ZS 50, 60, 70, 80, 100 and 200. I don’t know if it is on their M43 series cameras. Oh yeah, they also have it in their bridge cameras. It works similarly to Sony’s CIZ. At least that has been my experience.

Edit: I misspoke when I originally posted this, saying that CIZ only works in raw. Sorry, that should have been JPEG. I have corrected the sentence. My apologies to all.

I think, like I so often do, that you misspoke. You can't shoot in raw or even raw + jpeg. It would be nice if the camera was intelligent enough to drop the raw capture when you activated CIZ.

And unlike a tele extender, CIZ does not reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor. On my Sony bodies I have CIZ programed to one of the custom buttons.

And Topaz offers a program that does a credible job of converting JPEG files to Raw files, if necessary or advisable for post processing.

Alternatively, Topaz also offer Gigapixel AI, which does a similar job to CIZ, and no need to "convert" 8 bit in camera baked jpegs to a kind of RAW.

Converting jpeg to RAW is like converting a cake into flour, butter, etc.

As someone pointed out the best thing of CIS, is that it works and comes free with the camera.

The biggest downside, is that it doesn't work with RAW. That is a deal breaker for me.

Supposedly, Fuji has a version that is working with raw - but I cannot confirm this - yet . .....Soon, ALL cameras will have this feature !

CIZ only works in JPEG. It will not work when shooting RAW

To be clear the gentleman from Alaska has edited his post.
