Here in the Los Angeles area crime has increased with the onset of CV19 and the State's law that has changed the limits for petty theft to $950. Our local Sheriffs department has sent this reminder to all. Take notice to bold text please.

Please share this with your family, friends and neighbors.

Surveillance cameras are beneficial wherever they are in assisting with potentially linking individuals to committed crimes caught on camera. The camera itself does not stop the actions. It’s imperative that the community members take measures to protect themselves from potentially becoming a victim. These are a few measures that one can start implanting to make themselves safer out in the community.

I suggest:

1- Area awareness! Know who is around you. Make eye contact with those in your immediate area. Criminals do not like to be detected and you being watchful makes you a less desirable target. We see countless surveillance footage where victims were unaware of who was approaching them before they were victimized. The video at the bakery in Rowland Heights shows the suspect standing close to the victim and her being unaware that he was in a position to grab her purse. I’m not criticizing her. No one goes out thinking there is criminals standing around them waiting to prey on them. It’s easy to become complacent because we assume most people are good. Most are, but not all!

2- When walking to and from the parking areas of business, churches, gyms, restaurants, etc. stay off you phone!! Whatever is on your phone can wait till you get out of harm’s way. If you need to look at the phone, look at it then look up and around. I see numerous people walking unaware of who is near them. Your safety is your responsibility! When looking at your phone at night, the light from the phone decreases you visual acuity. Someone could grab your belongings or rob you of your possessions and you would not get a clear look at the suspect due to your more constricted pupils.

3- Women! You seriously need to consider carrying purses with straps. The strap needs to be around the neck. Many thieves know that to pull a purse off of a bag shouldered across the neck, will take force. That force turns the crime into a robbery which is a “crime of person” . Those crimes are still prosecuted with more severity than the “property crimes” that this state has moved closer towards decriminalizing.

4- Lock all doors to residences and vehicles when away from them. Leaving desirable items in plain sight in a vehicle is all but asking a thief to break in and take them. Our area will remain a desirable target for thieves because some members of the community still make theft profitable here. If a criminal comes to Rowland Heights and walks off with hundreds of dollars in stolen good left behind in cars, they will return again and again and again!!!!

5- Install lighting outside your residences. It is easier to see criminal activity at night when the area is illuminated. Start neighborhood watches to look out for each other. Know your neighbors so you know who belongs at their residences, especially when they are away. , Walk outside and look around. Crimes are happening around you. Because we have become a society who keeps to themselves our community is an easy place to get away with crime. Pay attention to your neighborhood. there are

We all need to know the victim is no longer the prime concern of legislature. The move towards decriminalizing many existing crimes has removed the per-existing threat of incarceration for these crimes. As citizens you now have the responsibility to learn about the crimes from your areas and address what your vulnerabilities area. I can only give you suggestions to make you safer. Many citizens are frustrated by what they see and hear going on in the community. We in law enforcement are frustrated as well. We attempted to educate the communities about upcoming laws on the books and told the community legislation did not favor the law abiding citizen. We have not given up on the community. It has only been made harder for us to stop crime. We still look to make our areas safer through street patrolling, thorough investigations by our detectives, and community education.

All is not lost, but the responsibility of community safety is all of ours. Criminals are being immediately released in the field for crimes that a few years ago would have kept them off the street for several days if not longer. Share information amongst each other and with law enforcement.

To address the concern about racism. I think it’s less about race and more about a target rich environment. Our community is demographically a predominantly Asian population so crimes here will statistically be against Asians. Victimizing is not based on race alone. If members of any community remain unaware of the potential threats that they face and if they disregard their own responsibility to make themselves and their community a less desirable target they will be preyed upon by predators. I’m not being condescending but I see countless incidents where people placed themselves in a position to be victimized. Our community is not the only one suffering from the crimes we read and hear about.

I am open to any way to help educate the members we serve. COVID -19 has removed the ability to host community meetings to get information out there. I look to all, I have addressed in this email, to help spread the word. I have attended a few outdoor neighborhood watch meeting during the COVID-19 era and now that the weather is getting warmer I feel that we should all consider a updated meeting in all of your areas. I’m okay with Zoom or a similar platform. The option of conducting a meeting in a park or in a driveway with all the precautions set forth by the department of public health is okay with me and my partner. It would be good to get new membership in the watch programs and re-address the need from each of us.

Feel free to contact me and /or provide me your feedback. I work for you all.

Sad state of affairs... I lived in California for 17 years during the '80s and '90s and it was my favorite place out of all the places I've lived including 4 states and 3 countries. I would not consider living there now.

I carry a Ruger (with a concealed carry permit). If somebody tries to rob me, he'll wind up in either the hospital or the morgue. Thanks to Florida's "Stand your ground" law.

I also have security cameras around my house, and alarms in both vehicles.

I live in Illinois and we are following Californias lead. Our wonderful corrupt Democrat leaders also are favoring heavily those who break the laws over those who follow the laws. The research they must have done shows they will gain more votes changing laws to make criminals their base voters. People are moving out in record numbers and those in charge wonder why.
