This is related to photography & software.

Has anyone voluntarily upgraded or mistakenly upgraded (or is it downgraded) your 2017 or older iMac to OS Big Sur?

If so what was your experience like particularly related to Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and other programs you use for your image processing? I have been holding back because the last thing I need is the stress of trying to figure it all out after the fact.

Thank you in advance for your comments.

I attempted to but it would not install. That was on a mid-2010 iMac. I purchased a new iMac a few months ago. Transferred the files from the 2010 iMac. Checked that things were working. Then upgraded to Big Sur. No issues. There are several programs that won't run on the new OS. They are 32bit applications. That was expected.

I have a 2017 MacBookPro and once I had the disk space, the Big Sur installation worked well. Some plug-ins have to be updated from the plug-in provider.

Likewise, I have a late-2015 iMac and recently upgraded, 2 weeks ago, to Big Sur. It has all gone remarkably smoothly

I have an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) and a MacBook Pro 2016, 16g ram both are now running Big Sur. I use Lightroom and PS, no issues!

I have a late 2015 iMac that I upgraded to Big Sur and I do have a problem with the Texture slider in Lightroom. If I use the Texture slider it will freeze up my computer and change some colors for about 1 to 2 minutes. So for now I just use the slider last.

I have it easy. My 2012 iMacs can no longer update the OS.

This shouldn't be too concerning if you use the Time Machine (with an external drive, of course) on a regular basis. Just before upgrading the OS, run the Time Machine software so that you would be able to restore your iMac back to normal in case of any glitches.

Big Sur is generally OK, but forget about 32-bit apps. And I just discovered that it messses up my many TTF fonts, seeming to insist to OTF fonts. Luckily, I can convert. This is an OS in need to some first aid treatment!

I have a 5-year-old iMac and installing Big Sur went without a hitch. I've gone through 2 Big Sur updates and Affinity Photo continues to run fine with it.

The texture slider issue is separate from the Big Sur OS. I had Catalina running a month ago on a 2016 iMac and the same slider issue started when Lightroom was updated to 10.1.1. I spent an hour on the phone with Adobe support and messed around with some of the preferences and it improved. Adobe recommended that I update to Big Sur and I did. Seems to be working OK now.

Yes, I do use Time Machine so that's a plus.

Okay - mostly positive and honestly unexpected replies. Thank you all for your input. I'm feeling better about installing Big Sur now.

Thanks again.
