You have my condolences on the loss of your pet. In mid-2020 my wife got three African Cichlids and almost as soon as we put them into the tank together, two of them became aggressive. We had to divide the tank, add another tank and separate the little darlings. We were warned they could exhibit that behavior and we saw it firsthand.
Thank you. Yeah, I knew they were an aggressive species before I set up the tank. I had to do just a bit of culling in order to keep what I have. It is just their nature.

You can really grow to love Oscars. I have had one with the same hole in the head disease, and yes, I fed him live food also, but never thought of that as a reason - Hmm. I have never spawned Oscars, but that would be cool. I just have two 55s now plus an outdoor pool (a converted in-ground swimming pool) for Koi. One is a hard water alkaline tank for Africans and the other is a soft water tank that is dominated by the biggest Angel you ever saw and a school of black neons. It was a mated pair and spawned regularly, but his mate died (he doesn’t seem to miss her). I’m currently looking for another Black Ghost knife and maybe a pair of clown loaches to go with him. Looking forward to those images - good to find another fish hobbyist.

Cheers,
Chris

A friend of mine had a salt water tank and he took very good care of it. I think they are very cool but how does one go on holiday? They are such high maintenance.

I will have to pm you with my Koi story sometime. It is not what you would expect, but it is very funny.

By all means send me the Koi story (and yes, salt water tanks are lovely, but require too much attention for me.).

I know what you’re saying, I had a big cichlid that I lost when my tank spontaneously sprung a leak. I was more upset about the fish than having to replace a hardwood floor. Sorry it happened.

I certainly understand your feelings for your aquatic friends. The death of a Tri-color Shark at 19 years, brought tears to my eyes. I still have two other children that have lived well beyond their average lifespan.....One, a Kissing Gourami, has made it to 21 years, and a Raphael Catfish that has attained the ripe old age of 41.

I'm not going to laugh Tom I think it is very sad. Especially if the poor fish was being bullied. We had tropical fish when the children were young and each time one died, it was buried in the garden and a few words were spoken.
Hope the others remain healthy.

Interesting story - but is it a 10,000 litre tank or a 75 gallon tank?

I was wondering the same thing. 10,000 liters = 2641.7 gallons. That's one big tank ! :-)

Commiserations! Cichlids are intelligent, for fishes, and they have a lot of personality.
An aquarium like that can be fun just to sit and watch. In my old college days I'd sit across the room and watch my fish tank through binoculars. That is weird, but actually I do recommend it.

Try not to laugh too hard, Sylvia. I am serious. A year ago January, I refurbished my 75 gallon (10,000 liter) fish tank and decided to populate it with a variety of African cichlids. Well, some died just because. Since they were very small, and new, it was no big deal for I had no real attachment developed yet.
It has been a year now and after feeding them every day, seeing them grow, doing water change outs and making sure that filters are changed regularly, I get to sit and watch and enjoy them whenever I want. So yeah, I have become attached somewhat.

The downside to having African cichlids is that they do become aggressive and territorial, therefore fighting quite a bit as the grow bigger. However, I never saw this one coming. This one is pretty big at 6 inches in length, but he sure got the crap kicked out of him! I just photographed him on the 8th of February and he was dead by the 10th.

His type is called a "Bumble Bee" They start out black with yellow stripes. As they grow older, the yellow fades to a light shade of black. I had two, now I am down to one : (

At least I still have a bunch more - for now.

I hear ya'. I had a similar thing happen to me once. The difference being that even though no fish were killed when the tank went, one of my favorite books was ruined in a room underneath the tank and the water went through the floorboards and I did not discover the damage until a couple of months later.

Sorry about your loss but the other part is pretty neat.

It is o.k. for you to laugh. It is only a fish (I am trying to keep it together by keeping things in perspective). Bullying is quite common with cichlids. I knew this before going into this venture.

Oh, I am just trying to help out our friends whom use the metric system by translating the equivalencies. It is 75 imperial gallons (whatever "imperial") means. I am just kidding about the last part; I know what a gallon is.
