Check your credit card. Many will double the factory warranty.

Thank you very much Hoggers for all your excellent advice as usual ! I made up my mind as I said in my question about coming to a general consensus by all your answers and again you people came through and were very thoughtful for taking your precious time in advising me. I will act accordingly.

Statistically not worth it but>>>> I must be the exception over the last 20 years.

I have had good success with MACK on two occasions when a camera was replaced and a lens replaced. Water damage to one and butterfingers with the other. I have purchased square trade for other things but have not yet had the need to utilize this company.

Hello Hoggers,
You people always come through and I always value your opinions. I do a general consensus after and I'm usually satisfied with the results so far.
Is spending the extra money worth it for an extended warranty? The camera cost will be around $4000 or will I be better off spending that money on extra equipment ? Thank you kindly & Pax.

I never buy extended warranties on anything including appliances and vehicles. My logic is: Over the long term, insurance companies must collect more in premiums than they pay out for claims or they would operate at a loss. If you are an average care taker of your equipment you will likely spend less on repairs/replacements over the long term than you would on extended warranties or any other kind of insurance. By “long term” I mean 20 - 40 years, long enough to average out your losses against non-losses. Frank

Failures will occur, albeit low.

You're basically betting they will, the insurance company is betting they won't.
Guess who wins 90+% of the time?

Exactly, it's simply gambling, and betting on a long shot (inside straight!). If extended warranties were not profitable for those who sell them they wouldn't push them so hard... how many calls did you get this week trying to sell you an extended warranty on your car... I got at least one a day!

You are covered by the manufacturer for at least one year as the original warranty. These extended warranties are insurance policies. Purchase insurance on items that you cannot afford to fix or replace yourself. Compare risk vs cost just like any insurance policy. No right or wrong answer. Up to the buyer.

I have extended warranties on all of my lenses and cameras. On my old camera and 2 of my lenses they paid off. Mac Warranty fixed everything for free plus shipping. So when I bought my EOS RP I got the Mac Warranty on the new equipment. The warranties are good for 5 years.

Insurance is a convoluted gamble. The company bets that they will take your money...you pay them betting they won't. It seems like a loosing proposition.

I bought an open box Minolta 5D from Circuit City. Bought a 5 year Mack warranty for $60.The camera failed 4 times in 5 years. The last time it failed was 3 days before the warranty was up. After waiting a month, the sent me a refurbished camera. I used it for a year and gave it away to a co-worker. She is still using it today. Best $60 I ever spent.
Also bought a 5year 60,000 mile warranty from VW on my 2006 Passat. Back then, it was $1000. I estimate the repairs that they paid for was about 7K. That included a new long block because of a fuel pump failure. Shavings in the oil.

An extended warranty is FREE.

When you buy a product/camera with most VISA/Master Cards the manufactures' warranty is DOUBLED. One year becomes two, two = four, and longer are extended less. Check your card's benefits in the fine print.

You buy the $1,500 camera with, say, the Citi Visa (mine is partnered with Costco) the extra warranty is doubled provided: you maintain a copy of the original mfg's warranty; Your purchase receipt. AKA: FREE EXTENDED WARRANTY.

in example you have a one year warranty and in the 18-month the shutter stops working. Nikon quotes $425.00 to repair. You file a claim with Cita Visa sending the original warranty, your purchase receipt showing you used the Citi Visa to purchase the camera, and the repair estimate. Bingo! A check for $425 arrives in your mailbox.

I also have an all risk policy from USAA that is very inexpensive that covers damage, drops, etc. About 15-years ago my D90 fell from my SUV to the concrete. Nikon repair estimate $1,800. A new D90 $1,950. USAA sent me a check for $1,950.

The dates and figures are my approximate memory however a true story.

Good news, you are wrong on that Costco citi Visa card extended warranty. Most cards do as you said. Not this one. You will always get 2 more years no matter the initial warranty. For example. If you buy something with 1 year, you will now have 3 years. This is true up to a maximum of 7 years. It's the best deal out there.

When extended warranty is offered in the store, I always ask how much it costs, then decline.
Once I'm home, I put exactly that amount of money in my savings account. When a few years ago, my laptop went on the blink, it would have cost more to fix it than to buy a new one. By that time I had enough money in my savings account to go to the store and buy a new laptop! Of course I was offered extended insurance again, declined and put that amount into savings as well.
It is tempting to use that money for buying other things as well, but so far I've only used it for items that needed replacement.
It's kind of being my own insurer, but instead of the insurance being for 2 or 3 years, I have decided to make it valid for the life of the item. And I will use it to replace items I bought even before I started this.

I never buy the warranty on electronics like TV's or computers. As a former developer for 35 years if my laptop goes bad (most for my purposes last 3-4 years, the new ones are always cheaper and so many upgrades. I just gave my wife my Dell and I purchased a ASUS Tuf706 with ryzen 7 4800h, 64 gig memory a 2060x video card, 1 tb nv.me2 ssd. The whole thing was 1500. The screen isn't as good as some, however when attached to my 34" 4k monitor it is fantastic
