Appears that you have spent some time learning the selection tools, they can be a lot of fun, I use them a lot!
One trick I was shown was to look at an image in it's three channels RGB then use the selection tool on the one channel that give the best results. once you have the selection, you can go back and select with all three channels in one layer.
