The term apochromatic is applied to an optic that brings 3 different wavelengths of light (colors) to the same focus as opposed to only 2 wavelengths for achromatic optics. With this design approach, the focus vs. wavelength plot can bed made nearly flat across the visible range of colors, thereby reducing chromatic aberration to a minimum. This result is something that is not possible with an achromatic design.

Give this man a cigar. In astronomy, an APO is an apochromatic telescope.

"APO" stands for "Army Post Office". It is normally followed by a number which serves as a code for a particular military unit or installation. ... Military addresses must show the grade, full name with middle name or initial, and PSC number, unit number, or ship name.

Of course in regard to optics such as lenses APO refers to Apochromatic. It also stands for "Very Expensive" as one can see when comparing a more typical lens to that of one that is of APO design.

For example, I use microscope objectives as the lens for my camera when I do micro photography and the cost of a new 10X achromatic Plan Infinity microscope objective is less than $50. A new 10X APO Plan Infinity microscope objective is between $800 to $1000.

Anyone that is offering an APO lens in the same price range as a standard lens should be viewed very carefully for it may be APO in marketing terms only.

With modern very low dispersion glass and grown fluorite elements an apo telescope can be designed with only two glass elements.
