Fascinating detail of the mouthparts! I’m stumped about the tongue-like structure. The upper parts of the mouth are easily ID’d, down to the mandibles. I’m guessing it’s the ‘lower lip’, or labium, extended. Wonder how it functions? Perhaps, as some Checker Beetles (I agree) feed on pollen, the two lobes at the end, possibly called the paraglossae, scoop up pollen and transmit it to the mouth – don’t know. The closely cylindrical beetle, however, might invade boring beetle chambers to feed on the beetle larvae (a common strategy of Checkers, both larvae and adult) – then why the odd ‘tongue’??? Your photos always make me think!

Thanks, Relbugman. Your replies are always ever so educational for me and I truly, truly enjoy reading and learning from them. They add context to what I see through my lens in ways that I could not learn otherwise.

Back to your awesome stacks, I see.

Thanks, Kpmac. There is a gravity that appears to always draw me back to them.

Fantastic image!!!!Gary

Thanks, Manglesphoto. Those of us that live in Missouri never know what weather will come our way so we have to be prepared to always be able to do something indoors and this is my indoor passtime.

Well done! Focus stacking takes skill--or a D850!

Thanks for viewing and for the reply. I take these sessions with a little Fujifilm X-T20. I always tend to be behind the curve for I bought my Nikon D810 within two months of the D850 being released. I was using it for focus stacking however I ran up over 250,000 shots on it so I put it away for special uses now. The D850 in high on my 'wish list' and those who have one know why they are so highly coveted.

By the way, 'beetles' are always adults, the larvae are usually grubs or somewhat worm-like, or mobile 'mealworm' forms, the pupae nearly always unmoving (a few exceptions) even if they look like a beetle. Only adults have wings (and wing covers - modified top wings).

Way cool..! Another valuable bit of information. I've found many grubs, even used them as panfish bait. I've also come across a few pupae while digging at times also which truly look quite like an alien lifeform.
