Call again and ask to speak to a supervisor. Also have you research the internet thoroughly regarding this problem?

I have a researched it quite a bit on the Internet, to the degree that I’m capable of understanding what I’m reading. To me it’s a camera taking pictures, it’s working. But the fact that I don’t ever recall seeing that before and suddenly I am seeing it on an empty card, and that it’s telling me that apparently the buffer can only hold 11 pictures, I don’t understand that none of my other cameras work this way and I have about six!

I’ve gotten some very good advice from everyone here so I guess I’ll just hold tight. It would seem to me that should be a way to clear the buffer or empty the buffer so that that did not come into the viewfinder but like I said while that may not be the case, I don’t ever recall seeing that when I first got the camera and I have not taken that many pictures with it.

I guess larry I am wondering it doesn't go away when you turn the camera off/on....why it doesn't empty itself....

Because 11 is the number of images the buffer can hold. Try shooting in burst mode. Hold the shutter down for a few seconds and you’ll see the number go down. As it writes those shots to the card you’ll see the number climb back to 11

Let's first explain 'buffer'. When one image is captured, a file of data is transferred...

Response like this one from CHG_CANON are what make UHH such a great resource. The amount of knowledge on this site is incredible...

I should add, I only shoot in JPEG.............so files are not as large as RAW

That doesn’t change the size if the data in the buffer. The buffer is always raw data that gets converted to jpeg when it’s written to the card.

I have three Nikon DSLR's in front of me, they all, on a half-press of the release button show what you are seeing. It has always been there. r = remaining. Stress yourself no longer.

Awwwww....That’s a first! A person with three Nikons all saying the same. Thank you. With every comment I feel more at peace with this issue

Not completely at peace, you still call it an issue. The cameras are designed this way, it's a feature that you hadn't noticed before

Assuming this is an error message, some say it is not, I do not know. But if it is, try resetting camera to factory defaults or taking out battery until any power in camera disappears. Sometimes data can get stuck or corrupted in electronic devices and be a devil to correct. Had a VCR years ago that would not work because of something similar, finally I though maybe programming it would work where manual would not, that cleared up whatever was wrong.

Yes, explained to nikon that when I turned it on on the far right it showed 1.8 in brackets BUT as soon as you push the shutter button to focus, you get R11

The 1.8 in brackets is how many images that you can send to the card. The R11 is how many can go to the buffer. Two different things.

I believe the same area where the R11 is also used to display the number of shots before the memory card is full. I am not sure when it should display one value or the other.

When the camera is "off" it shows "Number of shots remaining" With the camera "on" a half-press of the release button it shows buffer capacity.
