I guess what has changed is that they and we are not at war anymore. Unfortunately, there are still some Americans near my age (85) who continue to blame the Vietnamese for the actions their grandparents took in defending their country against the American invaders. I found the people to be second on my list of the friendliest...even the North Vietnamese.

well what is done is done I dont have to tote a M16 looking for a kill. You can go there now and enjoy the beautiful country and the people. For me not so much but I would like to go back to Vietnam and go to Cu Chi its about 35 miles north west of Sigion ( Ho Chi Main City) thats where all the tunnels were when I was there. But dont know if I can handle going back.

It was a terrible time for both countries. I have family who fought there and will not go back. Bitter memories.

I was a helicopter pilot back then, and we flew into Cu Chi frequently. We weren’t aware that many of those tunnels ran right beneath the place. When I look at that area on Google Maps, I see that the entire area is so built up that it looks like Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City is one giant city encompassing that entire region. My second tour I was in Phu Loi and I about couldn’t find it on the map it was so grown up. It’s a totally different place. You can’t even tell where the Long Binh facility used to be.

Vietnam has come a long ways since the war, and it must be a beautiful country.

We were there at the same time. I was with the 199th Lt. Inf. Bde, aviation section. We supported the 25th Inf a few times.

The top photo is in Hanoi. The school girls acted shy, but were quite anxious to practice their English with me.

The bottom photo is on the road out of Hanoi to Sa Pa, a mountainous Hmong enclave, where all the other photos were taken. That’s a cemetery.

We never had a day when it did not rain, sometimes heavily. Our scheduled overnight narrow gauge train trip back to Hanoi had to be canceled, because the tracks were flooded.

Most of the Hmong women spoke adequate English but could neither read nor right it. They wore the products that they made and sold to the tourists.

The teenagers cooking in a hut just got home from school for lunch.

Great shots...enjoyed every one!

We made sure that the grunts got resupplied with whatever they needed. I brought in lots of ammo and hot food. We were the fast food service there.

Does not look like a lot has changed since 1970, at least in the more rural areas. Excellent photos. Well done and thanks for sharing them with us.
