Costco has just announced they are closing their photo centers in the stores due to declining volume. They will be online only in Arizona at least.

Our Sam's has closed its instore photo printing department & I've only been in the store one time since. They've always did a good job for me. I don't print a lot, but they were my go to printer.

I spoke with the Costco employee at my local store who had been working at the photo center for 7 years. He will continue to work at Costco in a different role. Without laying anyone off - that is, through reassignments, termination for cause, retirement, voluntary resignations, etc. - well-run businesses usually handle slowly changing demand in ways that don't cause a lot of unemployment. Massive layoffs usually indicate management failure to control costs on an ongoing basis or blindness to changes in demand and opportunity.

I don't know about other areas but in my area the Costco Photo employees are Costco employees who are assigned to the photo area. For that reason again in my area, the employees sometimes transfer in to and out of the photo area. One person who ran the photo area for years decided to take a management level transfer to overall store management and another present Costco employee took his place. There is no reason to think that the 8-20 different employees who work in the photo area will become unemployed because of the photo department closing. They will just be assigned other jobs in the store.

Frends. . . I didn't intend to make my comment to explore why Costco & Sam's closed their photo activities.
I want to find good color labs for us to send our files to be made up into hard copies. I have found a few by searching. I hope to share theirs names with you in the near future by posting them on this site. My list of labs
is not to be taken as an endorsement of any one lab. Just a list of labs that provide a service for us. Zucco

I was in a Costco yesterday and saw the sign.
The fellow said the in-store volumn was too low to justify the operation.
The employees will be assigned elsewhere.

Over the years I would notice quite a few people standing at the 3-4 terminals, uploading their photos from a variety of media. I have to admit that the volume has dropped dramatically in the last couple of years. I used to have my older Canon printer cartridges refilled at Costco but Canon has gotten clever and now the last couple of times I've done that, they are unable to reset the chip to show "full". So I have to monitor the print quality from time to time to determine if the levels are getting low. Now that service is gonzo, also, so it's moot.

It's la4rgely about revenue per square foot. As soon as they found they could make more money by putting something else in that space, the future was ordained. Labor is also considered. >Alan

I hate to be the devil's advocate, but if they were making money on photo processing, they wouldn't quit. Their primary (and perhaps only) duty is to their stockholders. That's just life as we know it.

The retail space is now worth more for something else than photo printing.

Our Costco store got rid of their photo section awhile ago and now that space is filled up with large tvs, which I'm sure is a much larger money-maker. I've ordered many metal prints from Costco and they've turned out excellent and at a reasonable price. Last time I ordered 8 metal prints and had them shipped to the store, since shipping to my home was expensive. Are you still going to be able to get photo items shipped to the store?

Good question. Shipping to one’s residence may get expensive. Will we still be able to pick up finished items at the store?

If I had used Costco for printing; I would volunteer to get the answer. So, why doesn't one of our UHH members who has an active account volunteer to get the answer(s) and post?

We are all waiting for someone to take the initiative.

Ok. So, is anyone-who uses Costco's service; willing to step up and volunteer to get the answer?

I called the Costco photo center and they said you can still get items shipped to the store for pickup. You may want to verify because the girl on the phone seemed confused and I repeated it several times. But she did say yes you can have it shipped to the store. I may email them for verification.
