Am I missing something - given when Ansel Adams lived the answer should be film or mm’s not jpg or raw unless you consider film raw.

How much more RAW can it get than shooting negative film????
I the film genre the only "jpg" equivalent would have been Polaroids!

Excellent point

Ansel Adams used the zone system when he developed his photos. He had 11 zones and only 9 would be recognized because one was pure white and one was pure black. The other were 9 shades of gray. How this relates to jpeg or raw I really can't say. Definitely had his own signature look.

So are all creative people.Painters made paint. It’s the same. To share your vision you need technical skills,

RAW is used to fix bad pictures

What a croc! Ansel would have used RAW and every damn software tool available. Do you really think he was thrilled to stay in his lab for hours and days to get the effect he wanted sniffing the chemicals? He used every tool and technique available to him at the time. Are you suggesting Ansel fixed bad pictures? Anyway, the statement on it's own is laughable opinion! Raw allows you to capture tons of data where jpg is grossly lacking.

Bravo!
Film=Raw.
Especially using the Zone System. The ultimate latitude.

I personally shoot JPEG most of the time, which IMO in roughly the equivalent of letting a lab print your images for you. (Something I always did with film).
Based on Ansel's most popular series of books (The Camera, The Negative, The Print) he would very definitely shoot RAW.
Ansel made a big difference to his images in the darkroom & he considered this to be a very significant part of the process.

Amen, brother! If you get right in the camera, there isn't much to do in post.

Actually that is inaccurate. Believing you have gotten it right in camera is not an verifiable fact, it is only an opinion. I wish I had a dollar for every image I've seen SOOC which could become a far better image in post even though the person who took it believed no post processing was required. Most images taken by everyone can be improved in post-processing to one degree or another by someone with a good eye, good software, and the appropriate skills.

The surest way to corrupt a novice is to explain the importance of shooting in RAW.

Oh? Ansel Adams was a master post processor in the dark room. As he was always looking for the highest quality in him images I feel it is safe to bet that he would have used RAW to give him the 14-bit rather than an 8-bit image file to manipulate.

Yes raw gives you the most image data and quality to work with. Ansel would have surely shot raw before any post processing. Folks need to understand that they will NEVER know all the best quality they can get out of their camera sensors and lenses unless they shoot raw.

As an award-winning pro of over 44 years in the business who shot film in 35mm, medium format and view camera size formats as large as 11X14 inch sheet film, raw gives you that kind of quality that Ansel got with his view camera in places like Yosemite.

We have gotten used to jpegs and their quality has improved but the camera's internal processor compresses jpeg images, and you lose dynamic range. Ansel was all about dynamic range and he used his zone system of exposure and film development to give his negatives maximum dynamic range, even before he worked in the darkroom for his final prints.

Ansel would NOT have wanted his modern camera's internal processor and algorithms to decide for him things like sharpness, color, dynamic range, noise reduction, camera bit depth, while throwing away some data.

Raw images record ALL the image data and quality your camera's sensor and lens can record, leaving it up to you to decide what choices you want to make in post processing.

As a pro I shoot raw+jpeg all the time. I use the jpegs for quick sharing and review,, and as backup images, but process the raw captures for my final image output. I want to reap the rewards for my money I have spent on top quality cameras and lenses.

FYI, I own two Ansel Adams image from Yosemite, prints that were made from the original negatives, printed by Ansel's son. They were gifts from my first marriage. I treasure those prints and they are truly amazing in their depth, clarity, and dynamic range. You wouldn't get this today from any jpeg image. Here is one humble shot of my own from Yosemite, from the raw image of my 61megapixel Sony A7RIV camera, using my Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens with a polarizing filter. Shot March 2, 2020. This is the classic "Tunnel View" with left, El Capitan; center-rear, Half Dome with a small rising moon; right, Bridal Veil Falls. Click on the image to see the better quality. Question, as long as this is still going on. What is better Canon RAW, Nikon Raw or other brands RAW.
