I love reading the forum, but unfortunately don't have the time to do so every day. When I do log in, about once a week, I find that the posts are not in any particular order; with some new posts commingled with some that I have already read. As an example, see the image below, for the lineup of posts I found today. Is there a way to sort posts by date order? Thanks.

Click Newest Topics link at the top to sort by date.
When shown in sections the topics are sorted according to the last reply, as is normally done on forums.

Is it possible to do this sort only for the section I'm in?

You have the option of selecting which forums are in your "newest topics" list. Go to "all sections" at the bottom of this page and click subscribe or unsubscribe to each one (each volunteer-moderated section will automatically show as UN-subscribed unless you've changed it).

You can use Newest Topics exclusively for Photo Gallery, if that should be your desire. Or if you just want to have Main Discussion Forum, then unsubscribe to all others.

You can still "browse" the other sections at any time.

Also, once you've clicked into a topic to read it, it will not display the bold-print NEW TOPIC banner. It may, however, display a label that says "new posts" - meaning more comments have been made since you last viewed.

In your screen print above, they all show as new topic. If you believe you've already read one of those, it might have to do with logging in on different devices, or the simple repetition of subject matter in main discussion
